Before you go
Bettiah with elderly parents: what to know
- Hire a car and driver for day trips instead of relying on shared vehicles.
- Keep town sightseeing to the cool hours; there is little shade and seating.
- Plan Valmiki as an overnight rather than a same-day return of about 160 km.
- Carry water, regular medicines and snacks for sanctuary and archaeological visits.
- Choose a hotel with a lift and easy car access near the station.
- Wear modest clothing and closed shoes for churches and uneven archaeological ground.
Easiest first
Places in Bettiah sorted by walking effort
Easy on the legs (3)
- Bettiah Catholic Church and Christian Quarter (Places of worship · 30-45 minutes) — The grounds are level and shaded in parts. Seating is available inside the church; expect crowds at festivals.
- Bettiah Raj Palace and Ghanta Ghar (Places to visit · 45-60 minutes) — The area is mostly level, but traffic, uneven pavements and limited seating make long walks tiring. Older visitors can see the clock tower and gate from a vehicle and walk only a short stretch.
- Udaypur Wildlife Sanctuary (Places to visit · 2-3 hours) — Walking is on level ground, but there is little shade, few benches and no cafe. Older visitors can enjoy the lake from the bund or a vehicle; carry water, sun protection and a hat.
Some walking — plan a break (2)
- Lauriya Nandangarh (Places to visit · 1.5-2 hours) — Paths are uneven and the mounds are grass-covered, with little shade or seating. Older visitors can view the pillar from the nearest approach and skip the mounds.
- Valmiki Tiger Reserve (Places to visit · Full day; better as an overnight) — Roads are long and safari jeeps are bumpy. Older travellers should plan an overnight near Valmiki Nagar, avoid mid-day heat and carry water and medicines.

Practical tips for Bettiah
- Heat. April to June is very hot and dry. Go outdoors in the first hours after sunrise or skip those months.
- Monsoon. July to September is very wet. Roads to the wetland and forest can be difficult, so winter is best.
- Getting around. Hire a car for Udaypur, Lauriya Nandangarh and Valmiki. Autos and e-rickshaws work in town.
- Permissions. Ask the Champaran forest division office in Bettiah about the sanctuary and rest houses, and the Valmiki office about safaris.
- Money. Carry cash for small purchases, since card acceptance can be patchy outside the main roads.
- Dress. Dress modestly for churches. Closed shoes help on uneven archaeological ground.
- Border. Bettiah is close to Nepal. Carry photo ID and check rules before approaching border areas.
- Food and water. Drink bottled water and eat freshly cooked food. Carry snacks for forest and wetland visits.
