Plan 01

1 day in Bhandardara

  1. 01

Day 1: Dam, falls and lake

Reach the village by mid-morning and begin at Wilson Dam, walking along the top and looking down at Umbrella Falls if the gates are open. Spend a quiet hour by Arthur Lake, then have lunch at your resort or an MTDC-style restaurant. In the afternoon, drive downstream to the Randha Falls viewpoint, keeping to the railed areas. Start the return drive before dark; hill roads are unlit in places.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time
Wilson Dam (Bhandardara Dam)45-60 minutesEasyEarly morning or late afternoon; July to September when gates are open, October to February for clear views
Umbrella Falls30-45 minutesEasyJuly to September when the gates are open; check conditions before going
Arthur Lake1-2 hoursEasyEarly morning and late afternoon; post-monsoon months for clear water and green hills
Randha Falls45-60 minutesModerateJuly to October, when the river is full

Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

With parents at Randha Falls: The main viewpoint is a short walk from the road, but surfaces can be wet and uneven in the rains. The steep footpath to the pools below is not suitable for older visitors or those with limited balance.

Plan 02

2 days in Bhandardara

  1. 01

Day 1: Lake, dam and Randha Falls

Arrive in time for lunch, then walk to Wilson Dam and the foot of the dam where Umbrella Falls forms in the monsoon. Watch the light on Arthur Lake from the shore as the afternoon cools. If energy allows, drive to the Randha Falls viewpoint before dusk.

    Day 2: Ratanwadi and Amruteshwar

Drive about 22 km to Ratanwadi in the morning for the Amruteshwar temple, taking time over the carved pillars and ceilings. Those who want a short walk can go a little way up towards Ratangad; the full fort climb is a half-day effort. Return for a late lunch and head home in the afternoon.

Plan 03

3 days in Bhandardara

  1. 01

    Day 1: Lake and dam

Settle in, walk to Wilson Dam, and spend the afternoon beside Arthur Lake. Keep the evening free; the lake is at its best at sunset.

Pace: All the stops today are easy on the legs.

  2. 02

    Day 2: Falls and temple

Visit Randha Falls early, then drive on to Ratanwadi for Amruteshwar temple. Take a long lunch and rest. Evening on the lakeshore.

  3. 03

    Day 3: One big outing

Choose one: the Ratangad fort climb from Ratanwadi, a very early start for Kalsubai from Bari village, or, if it is late May or early June, an evening at Purushwadi for fireflies. Each is a full day with a guide or local operator, so book ahead.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time
Ratangad Fort4-6 hours round trip including restsDemandingOctober to February; avoid heavy monsoon

Pace: Ratangad Fort involves a lot of walking or steps — do it early, and keep the rest of the day light.

With parents at Ratangad Fort: This is a steep, rocky climb with iron ladders in places and long exposure to sun or rain. There is almost no seating or shade on the way. Most older visitors should admire it from Ratanwadi instead.

Guides for the stops on these routes

Pacing

Pacing a Bhandardara trip for parents and children

  • Keep to the dam, lake shore, Umbrella Falls and the Randha Falls viewpoint. They involve short walks and little climbing.
  • Amruteshwar temple at Ratanwadi has a short, mostly level approach and is a good half-day outing for parents.
  • In the monsoon, rock and steps are slippery. Wear grip-soled shoes and avoid the steep paths to the pools below Randha Falls.
  • Carry medicines, a water bottle and a torch. There is little medical help in the village, and the nearest larger towns are an hour or more away.
  • Book a room with easy vehicle access, and confirm whether meals are included, since eating options are limited after dark.
  • Skip Kalsubai, Ratangad and Harishchandragad unless you are fit and walking with a guide; all involve long climbs, ladders or exposed sections.
