Bhangarh is a ruined town of the Kachwaha Rajputs in Alwar district, on the boundary of Sariska Tiger Reserve. It was founded in about 1573 by Bhagwant Das of Amber as the residence of his second son, Madho Singh, and the plan is still readable: ramparts with several gates, temples near the entrance, a wide market street, large havelis and a palace set back against the hills.
Most people know it for its reputation as a haunted place, and a signboard from the Archaeological Survey of India does bar entry between sunset and sunrise. The ghost stories are folklore, and they say more about modern television than about the site. The documented story is of a town that declined after 1630, was annexed by Jai Singh II in 1720 and was left empty after the famine of 1783.
Visited for what it is, Bhangarh is a calm, open-air morning among stone ruins, with Aravalli ridges all round. Plan it as a day trip from Jaipur, Alwar or Dausa, go in the cooler months, wear sturdy shoes and carry your own water. The first stretch near the entrance is easy; the palace climb at the far end is the hard part, and it is fine to skip.
