Why it matters

Why Government Museum, Lohagarh Fort is worth your time

The museum fills a gap that the fort cannot. Walls and moats show you how Bharatpur defended itself; the galleries show who lived there, what they made and what the region produced before and during Jat rule. The sculptures from Bayana and Noh in particular link this part of Rajasthan to earlier centuries that most visitors do not associate with Bharatpur.

It also gives context to the park. Keoladeo's story as a royal reserve is only half the picture, and rooms full of arms, textiles and portraits explain the dynasty that built it. For families it is an easy, low-cost lesson in local history.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Enter through the arched doorway and take the galleries in order. The archaeological section shows sculpture from the Kushan period through to the 19th century, much of it excavated from places such as Noh and Bayana in the district. The arms section is aimed at the Jat warriors' weapons, and the handicraft and royal galleries hold painted fans, miniatures, furniture, instruments and silverware.

The museum occupies two historic buildings, the Kachahri Kalan and the Kamra Khas, both dating to the 19th century. Pay attention to the architecture as much as the cases: pillared pavilions, courtyards and a baradari give a sense of how the rulers lived and held court. A Mughal-style hammam is also part of the complex.

Allow an hour, longer if you like sculpture. Photography rules vary by gallery, so ask at the entrance.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Check opening days and the midday break
  • Ask about photography rules at the entrance
  • Pair it with the rest of the fort visit
  • Allow time to sit in the pavilions
