Bharatpur is a small town in eastern Rajasthan, and most people come for one reason: Keoladeo National Park, a flat, man-made wetland of dykes, woodland and marsh on its southeastern edge. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with more than 370 recorded bird species, and it is visited on bicycle or cycle rickshaw because private vehicles are not allowed inside.
The town itself has a history worth an afternoon. Suraj Mal founded Bharatpur in the 1730s as the capital of a Jat state, and his Lohagarh Fort, the 'Iron Fort', withstood British assaults in 1805. Inside are palace buildings and a state museum, while the Ganga Mandir, begun in 1845 and finished in 1937, is the best-known temple. Deeg, with its water-garden palace, is a short drive away.
The town works well as a two-day stop between Delhi, Agra and Jaipur, because it lies on the main road and rail routes between them. Plan the park for dawn, spend the afternoon at the fort and museum, and keep a day in hand if you want Deeg or Fatehpur Sikri. Winter is the season to come; the summer is severe, and the monsoon is wet but quieter.
It is also easy for older travellers. The park tracks are flat, the town sights are compact, and a rickshaw guide takes care of the hard work. The usual cautions apply: early mornings are cold in winter, shade is limited at midday, and facilities inside the park are basic.
