The short answer

Laxmi Vilas Palace: what visitors should know first

Good if you want a heritage stay near the park with space and gardens. Book ahead in winter, check lift and room access if travelling with elders, and expect a premium price compared with simple lodges.

History and context

The story behind Laxmi Vilas Palace

The palace was built in the 19th century for Raja Raghunath Singh, a younger brother of Maharaja Ram Singh, and was originally known as Raghunath Niwas or locally as Kakaji ki Kothi. Sources differ on the exact year, giving either 1857 or 1887.

It became a heritage hotel in the 1990s, and the hotel says the family of Raja Raghunath Singh still lives in the palace.

Why it matters

Why Laxmi Vilas Palace is worth your time

Laxmi Vilas is one of the few places where you can sleep in the Bharatpur rulers' world rather than only visit it. Built as a royal residence in the 19th century, it has kept its halls, murals and gardens, and it is still linked with the family of Raja Raghunath Singh.

For a trip centred on birds it also solves a practical problem: you can be at the park gate shortly after sunrise and return to a quiet garden for a midday rest, which suits older travellers.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Book a room with a clear view of the garden and ask about ground-floor options. The palace is spread across about 50 acres, with large halls, murals and a swimming pool. Staff can arrange early-morning transfers and rickshaw guides for the park, which is a short drive away.

Take an afternoon to rest after a dawn start in the park, and use the gardens for birdwatching of your own. Evening meals are served in the hotel's restaurant, with a bar on site. Winter evenings can be cold, so bring a light jacket.

Because demand peaks in the migratory season, book well ahead for November to February.
