Why it matters
Why Ganesh Ghat Trek is worth your time
Before the road existed, routes like Ganesh Ghat were how people reached Bhimashankar from the Konkan. Walking it is a way of arriving that matches the temple's mountain setting, with the climb from grassland to forest echoing the shift from coast to plateau.
For trekkers, it is also a gateway into the Bhimashankar forest, one of the best-known Sahyadri trails near Mumbai. Done in the cool season, it is a rewarding day out; done in the wrong month, it is a hazard.

How to experience it
The trek starts at Khandas village, reached from Karjat. It begins on open grass and scrub, then enters denser forest as you climb towards the plateau. A trek guide describes it as moderate to hard, with a total climb of around 800 m.
Start at first light, carry at least two litres of water, trail snacks, a rain jacket and a torch, and wear shoes with ankle support. There are no reliable water or food points on the trail, so do not rely on being able to buy anything en route.
Many walkers finish with darshan at the temple and a vehicle back, or stay overnight and descend the next day. Avoid July and August, when rain and leeches make the route difficult.
