The short answer

Kondhwal Waterfall: what visitors should know first

Only if you are here between July and October and are comfortable on rough roads. Ask locally for the current road condition; the falls are far less impressive in the dry months.

Why it matters

Why Kondhwal Waterfall is worth your time

Waterfalls are what the Sahyadris are best known for in the monsoon, and Kondhwal gives Bhimashankar a water-and-birds stop away from the temple crowd. For visitors who come in the green season, it is a chance to see how the same plateau looks when the rain is at its heaviest.

It also serves as a reminder that the Bhimashankar area is bigger than the temple village, with villages, forest and streams along the approach road. Treat it as an optional extra, not a headline.

The route shows the quieter villages below the temple.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

The temple trust describes the route as a right turn at Kondhwal Phata, about 3 km from Bhimashankar, followed by a further 5 to 6 km to the falls. It adds that the waterfall is also known as Bird Point and lies near the sanctuary.

That is all the official page says, so confirm conditions with drivers, the forest post or your hotel before setting off. In the monsoon the road can be rough and the falls swollen, and slippery rock near the water is the main danger.

Visit in good daylight, keep well back from the water and do not enter pools after rain. In dry months the falls reduce to a trickle and are not worth the drive.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Ask locally for current road conditions
  • Go in daylight
  • Keep away from the water edge
  • Carry water
  • Skip it in the dry months
