Why Sanchi is worth your time
Sanchi is one of the most important Buddhist pilgrimage sites in India. The Great Stupa was commissioned by Emperor Ashoka in the 3rd century BCE (though rebuilt in its current form around the 1st century) and is one of the oldest stone structures in India. The four toranas are among the finest examples of ancient Indian sculptural art, carved with Buddhist narratives and adorned with symbols.
The site represents a high point of Buddhist civilization in ancient India. For visitors, it offers a direct encounter with how Buddhists understood and expressed their faith through architecture and sculpture. UNESCO inscribed Sanchi as a World Heritage Site in 1989.

How to experience it
Leave Bhopal early, around 7 am, so you arrive at Sanchi by 8:30 am, before the site gets hot and crowded. Start at the Great Stupa, the massive dome-shaped monument dating to around the 1st century BCE. Walk around it, observing the four toranas (gateways) at the cardinal points, carved with scenes of Buddha's life.
The site also contains smaller stupas, monasteries and a temple. A guide helps you read the carved scenes and understand their meaning. Climb to the top of the enclosure for views over the site. Bring water, a hat and sunscreen. Lunch options are limited; bring packed food or plan to eat in the small town of Sanchi below the site.
End your visit by late afternoon so you can return to Bhopal by sunset. If visiting with family, set children a task, such as finding particular carved scenes or counting the toranas, to make the visit more engaging.

What is the Great Stupa at Sanchi?

Both are major Buddhist sites, but different. Bodhgaya is where Buddha attained enlightenment. Sanchi is a site of relics and royal patronage of Buddhism.
