Why Junagarh Fort is worth your time
Junagarh Fort was built by Raja Rao Bika in 1426, the founder of Bikaner, and it remained the seat of the Bikaner rulers for nearly 500 years. What you see is mainly the work of the 16th to 18th centuries, when successive rulers expanded and decorated the palace. The fort was never taken in battle.
Unlike many Rajasthan forts, which sit on hills, Junagarh is embedded in the city. This makes it feel less like a military stronghold and more like the administrative and residential heart of an urban kingdom. The carvings, the jharokhas and the pietra dura work show the refinement of the court and how it adapted Mughal taste to Rajput form.

Start at the main entrance and let the carved stone facade work on you before you go in. The outer walls, dating from the late 16th century, are set with jharokhas and chattris in pale sandstone, and they show the wealth and taste of the rulers who built the place.
Inside, the ground-floor galleries hold the Dalmia Museum, with its collection of paintings, weapons, costumes and manuscripts. The courtyards open up at intervals, and you can rest in the shade of archways. If energy allows, climb to the first-floor galleries to see painted walls and old royal apartments. The Anup Mahal, the audience hall, sits on the ground floor with its original decorated ceiling.
Do not rush. The detail in the latticed windows, the pietra dura inlay and the carved brackets is the real story here. Allow time for the courtyards and keep a camera ready for the interplay of light and shadow through the jharokhas.
