Lalgarh was built by Maharaja Ganga Singh between 1902 and 1926, at a time when the British were consolidating their rule and Rajput princes were eager to show their wealth and taste on an imperial scale. The architect was Sir Samuel Swinton Jacob, the same designer of so many grand buildings in Jaipur and Rajasthan.
The palace represents the last great phase of Rajput palace building before India's independence. It blends the architectural language of Victorian Britain with Mughal motifs and Rajput carvings, creating a style that could only exist in colonial India. Seeing it helps you understand how the Bikaner court positioned itself at the turn of the 20th century.

How to experience it
Enter through the grand driveway lined with trees and past the lotus pool. Lalgarh is designed for spectacle: the exterior has domes, chattris and turrets in terracotta stone, and the interior is painted in warm ochres and creams. Your guide will walk you through the state rooms, the dining halls, and some of the royal apartments.
Look for the mirror work on the ceilings, the chandeliers and the pieced screens, which show how the ruling family admired European taste while retaining Rajput sensibility. The courtyards are planted with heritage trees and ornamental gardens. Some parts of the palace are now boutique hotel rooms, so do not expect all areas to be open.
The palace is best appreciated from outside as well. Walk around the perimeter and look at the chattris and turrets silhouetted against the sky.
