Why it matters

Why Achanakmar Tiger Reserve is worth your time

Achanakmar was set up as a wildlife sanctuary in 1975 and declared a tiger reserve in 2009. A hilly corridor links it to Kanha, which helps tigers and other wildlife move through the region. It is part of a biosphere reserve that also covers the Amarkantak plateau, where the Narmada and Son rivers rise.

For visitors based in Bilaspur it is the nearest sizeable forest and gives a different side of Chhattisgarh from the ruins and temples. Even without a tiger sighting, the sal forest and hills are worth seeing for nature lovers.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Plan this as a full-day outing from Bilaspur and start early. The reserve spreads across Mungeli district in Chhattisgarh and neighbouring districts of Madhya Pradesh, and is part of the Achanakmar-Amarkantak Biosphere Reserve. Roads in are long, so arrange a car and driver.

The forest is mainly sal, saja, bija and bamboo. Wildlife listed for the reserve includes tigers, leopards, gaur, sloth bears, dhole, sambar, chital and nilgai, although sightings depend on luck and season. Expect to see deer and birds more reliably than big cats.

Check access rules before you set out, since forest roads, entry points and safari arrangements are set by the forest department. Carry food and water. If your parents find long rides tiring, consider this optional and choose the Ratanpur or Malhar outings instead.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Confirm entry rules and monsoon closure with the forest office
  • Start early and arrange a driver
  • Carry food, water and medicines
