Bilaspur is the second city of Chhattisgarh, a busy divisional headquarters on the Arpa River and a major railway junction. Visitors rarely come for the city itself. They come because it is the sensible base for the Kalachuri heartland to the north and south: Ratanpur, the former capital, and Malhar, an ancient site with temples and a museum.

Ratanpur lies about 25 km north on the Ambikapur highway. Its ruined fort, restored gates and tanks, and the Mahamaya Temple, a Shakta pilgrimage site, make an easy half-day. Malhar, about 30 to 40 km south-east, is quieter and more archaeological, with fort mounds, Kalachuri-era sculpture and the 12th-century Pataleshwar Temple.

Beyond the heritage sites, the city offers Kanan Pendari Zoological Park and, further north, Achanakmar Tiger Reserve. Facilities for tourists are basic, signage is thin and winter is the comfortable season, so plan with a car and driver and a rest in the afternoon.

For older travellers, Bilaspur works well as a base because the main sights are day trips on reasonable roads. Keep outings short, choose cooler months and expect to ask locally for opening hours.

Food to try in Bilaspur

Food and restaurants

Bilaspur's food is Chhattisgarhi home cooking: simple, rice-centred and lightly spiced. Local dishes include fara and muthiya (steamed rice-flour dumplings), chousela (rice-flour puris) and sabudana bada, along with sharbati wheat rotis. Doobraj rice is a regional speciality.

Eateries near the railway station and market serve thalis and snacks. There is no single landmark restaurant to recommend, so ask your hotel for a clean, busy place. Stay with freshly cooked food and bottled water.

Shopping in Bilaspur

Shopping

Bilaspur is known for handloom Kosa silk sarees and for tasar silk, which is produced in the region. Ask for Kosa fabric in the main market and in shops that sell handloom goods, and check for a handloom mark or buy from a reputable cooperative. Prices vary and bargaining is common in smaller shops.

Choose without overthinking

Which Bilaspur experience is right for your trip?

Most plans get crowded because nobody is willing to choose. These comparisons make the trade-offs clear.

Ratanpur or Malhar, if you only have one day?

Choose Ratanpur for an easier day: the fort and Mahamaya Temple are close together and temple life is active. Choose Malhar if you prefer archaeology, quieter sites and a museum.

Ratanpur Fort or Malhar Fort?

Ratanpur has restored gates, tanks and temples and feels like a former capital. Malhar's fort survives as mounds, so it is more for archaeology enthusiasts.

Zoo or tiger reserve?

Kanan Pendari is easy, inside the city and reliable for families. Achanakmar is a long day for nature lovers, with sightings uncertain.
