Day 1: Ratanpur
Drive to Ratanpur early and see the Mahamaya Temple at darshan time, then walk through Ratanpur Fort and its tanks. Return for lunch and a rest, then spend the late afternoon at Kanan Pendari Zoological Park if it is open.
Stop Time needed Walking Best time Ratanpur Fort 1–1.5 hours Moderate Early morning or late afternoon, October to March Kanan Pendari Zoological Park 2–3 hours Moderate Mornings, November to February Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.
With parents at Ratanpur Fort: Paths are uneven, with scattered masonry, steps at the gates and little seating. Much of the interest is near the entrances, so older visitors can see the Singh Dwar and Ganesh Dwar and stay near the garden area rather than the outer ruins.
With parents at Kanan Pendari Zoological Park: Paths are mostly level and tree-lined, with huts for resting by the lake. The full circuit is long, so older visitors can do part of it or hire the on-site transport if available. Midday heat from April to June is hard going.

Pacing
Pacing a Bilaspur trip for parents and children
- Visit Ratanpur and Malhar on separate days so no day becomes too long.
- Go to temples early, before queues and heat build.
- Carry water, a hat and any regular medicines; sites have few facilities.
- Choose a hotel with a lift or ground-floor rooms and reliable power backup.
- Hire a car and driver for the day instead of using public transport to the sites.
- Heat: April to June is very hot, often above 40 degrees C. Plan outings for early morning and rest after lunch.
