Plan 01

1 day in Binsar

  1. 01

Day 1: Sanctuary and Zero Point

Drive up from Almora early, ideally arriving by mid-morning. Walk to Zero Point from the end of the road, about two kilometres on foot, taking it slowly and resting where needed. Have lunch at your lodge or a rest house, then take a gentle forest walk or visit the small sanctuary museum. Start the drive back before dusk, since the hill road is narrow.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time
Zero Point (Jhandi Dhar)2-3 hours return including time at the topModerateClear mornings, particularly October to November and March to April

Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

With parents at Zero Point (Jhandi Dhar): The walk is on a forest track that rises steadily, and the altitude makes it harder than the distance suggests. Many older travellers manage it slowly with rests, but some prefer to stop short; there are few benches, so bring a folding stool or take regular pauses.

Plan 02

2 days in Binsar

  1. 01

    Day 1: Arrive and settle

Reach your lodge by late morning, rest and have lunch. In the afternoon take a short forest walk near your stay, then watch the light change in the evening. Carry a torch and layers.

  2. 02

Day 2: Sunrise at Zero Point

Leave early for the Zero Point walk and the view at first light if the sky is clear. Return for breakfast, then spend the late morning at the museum or on a quiet birding walk. Drive back after lunch, stopping at Chitai Golu Devta on the Almora road if you like.

Plan 03

3 days in Binsar

  1. 01

    Day 1: Arrive and acclimatise

Drive up from Almora, settle in and take a short walk. An early night helps before a pre-dawn start.

  2. 02

Day 2: Zero Point and the forest

Walk to Zero Point at sunrise, return for breakfast and rest. In the afternoon, bird-watch or visit the museum.

Day 3: Jageshwar or Almora temples

Make a day trip to Jageshwar Dham or to the Kasar Devi, Katarmal and Chitai Golu Devta temples near Almora, then return or continue your journey. Confirm drive times locally; hill roads are slow.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time

Chitai Golu Devta Temple30-60 minutesEasyMorning; outside weekends and festival days

Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

With parents at Jageshwar Dham: Paths inside the complex are mostly level but uneven stone; the drive is long on winding roads. Plan rests and carry water.

Pacing

Pacing a Binsar trip for parents and children

  • Binsar is at about 2,400 m, so walk slowly, drink water and rest on the Zero Point climb. If breathlessness or dizziness occurs, turn back.
  • Choose a room close to where you plan to walk and ask about stairs, heating and hot water before booking.
  • Carry a torch, power bank and layers; some lodges supply electricity for only a few evening hours.
  • The road from Almora is narrow and winding. Hire a driver who knows hill roads, avoid night driving and avoid the monsoon months.
  • Mobile signal and card payments are patchy, so carry cash and download maps and tickets before you go up.
  • Keep medicines and a basic first-aid kit with you; the nearest large hospitals are in Almora and Haldwani, so plan accordingly.
