Why it matters

Why Museum Sultan Sulaiman Badrul Alamsyah is worth your time

The museum collects what the royal capital island and the city left behind: ceramics, regalia copies, manuscripts and photographs. It helps visitors understand the Johor-Riau-Lingga world before they see its monuments on Penyengat.

It was inaugurated on 31 January 2009 by Tanjung Pinang's mayor, and by 2022 held 2,613 items. For a family with children it is a short, cool and cheap way to make the Penyengat visit more meaningful, although the exhibits are modest and the labels mostly in Indonesian.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Reach the museum by taxi or a local ride from the Tanjung Pinang waterfront; the address is Jalan Ketapang No. 2 in the Kemboja area. The building was once the first elementary school in the city, from the Dutch period, and later used under other names, so the architecture is part of the story.

Inside, the collection is arranged in eight categories, from jewellery and weapons to household tools, ceramics, manuscripts, coins, photographs and prehistoric stone tools. Look for the replica of the royal regalia (cogan) of the Johor-Riau-Lingga and Pahang kingdoms; the original is in the National Museum in Jakarta.

Ask staff what is on display, since some items are not shown for lack of space. Pair the visit with Penyengat, where the same royal history can be seen in place.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Check opening days before you go
  • Take a taxi or local ride and agree the price
  • Expect Indonesian labels; use a translation app
  • Visit before Penyengat for context
