Why it matters
Why Royal Tombs and Raja Ali Haji's Grave is worth your time
Riau's rulers and scholars were buried here, so the site gives names and faces to the history you have just read about. Raja Ali Haji is honoured as a national hero for his work on the Malay language, and a Malay Language Monument was begun on the island in 2013 to recognise that contribution.
Wikipedia also lists the tomb of Raja Haji Fisabilillah, another national hero, among the island's sights. For a family it is a way to talk about how a small island produced writing and ideas that mattered across the Malay world, in a setting that is calm and not commercial.

How to experience it
After the mosque, follow the island road to the burial grounds. There are several enclosures: Commons photographs caption one as the tombs of two Riau kings, another as the tomb of Raja Hamidah, queen of Sultan Mahmud Shah III, and another as the tomb of Raja Ali Haji, the royal poet.
A local guide can explain who lies where and why Raja Ali Haji matters. Without a guide, read the information boards where they exist, and keep voices low. Do not step on graves, and ask before photographing people paying respects.
Allow time to sit under a tree afterwards. Then continue to the Balai Adat Melayu or Bukit Kursi.

Small decisions that make the visit easier.
