Area by area

Bir Billing neighbourhoods compared

  1. 01

    Tibetan Colony (Chowgan)

Best for: Walkers, monastery visitors and landing-field watchers

Good to know: Flat lanes, cafés and monasteries are all within a short walk, and the landing fields are on the edge. It is the easiest base for older travellers, although noise from cafés and flying afternoons can be lively. Foreign nationals may need a Protected Area Permit to stay in the colony.

Sights in this area: Chokling Monastery, Chowgan landing field, Deer Park Institute

  2. 02

Upper Bir (main road and bazaar)

Best for: Travellers who want to be close to buses and shops

Good to know: A more everyday part of Bir with guesthouses, small restaurants and transport links. Less atmospheric than the colony but practical, and a short ride from the landing fields.

  3. 03

    Foothills and hillside homestays

Best for: Quiet stays, workshops and longer retreats

Good to know: Guesthouses and learning centres in the hills above Bir give quiet and views. The trade-off is slopes, uneven paths and the need for a taxi, so check access carefully for older guests.

  4. 04

    Baijnath and Paprola

Best for: Rail travellers and temple visitors

Good to know: Baijnath Paprola station sits on the narrow-gauge line and Baijnath temple is close. It is a convenient overnight if you arrive by train, but there is less to do in the evening than in Bir.

Before you book

What to check when booking for older travellers

  • Ask for a lift, or a ground-floor room — many heritage hotels have steps and no lift.
  • Check how far the hotel is from the sights you care about, in minutes by road, not kilometres.
  • Prefer free cancellation until close to the date, in case plans or health change.
  • Look for 24-hour reception, in-house dining and a doctor-on-call policy.
  • Read recent reviews for noise — old-city streets and wedding venues can be loud late.
