Before you go

Bir Billing with elderly parents: what to know

  • Base yourself in the Tibetan Colony. Its lanes are flat, cafés offer frequent seating and the monasteries are close.
  • Watch the paragliders from a café at Chowgan rather than flying; the experience is similar and far less demanding.
  • Hire an experienced driver for Billing, as the road is steep and winding. Carry warm layers, since the meadow is windy and cold.
  • Monastery halls need shoes off and often floor seating. Ask about chairs, and wear socks for cold floors.
  • Avoid Rajgundha if mobility is limited; the road is rough and the final stretch may need walking.
  • Visit in October or November for clear, mild weather, and avoid July and August when rain and landslides are common.

Easiest first

Places in Bir Billing sorted by walking effort

Easy on the legs (7)

  • Andretta artists' village (Culture and craft · 2 to 3 hours) — The three main sites are small and spread along village lanes, with short walks between them. A car helps, seating is limited, and paths can be uneven.
  • Baijnath Temple (Places of worship · 1 hour) — The temple precinct is level with a few steps at the entrance and mandapa. Marble and stone floors can be hot at midday, so go early. Shoes come off before the shrine area.
  • Bir Tibetan Colony (Places to visit · 3 to 4 hours for a leisurely walk) — Lanes are mostly flat with light traffic, and cafés offer frequent seating. Some monastery steps and floor seating exist, but the colony as a whole is gentle for older walkers.
  • Chokling Monastery (Places of worship · 45 to 90 minutes) — Paths within the complex are mostly level and the walk from the colony lanes is short. The prayer hall requires shoes off and floor seating is typical, so ask about a chair if sitting on the floor is difficult.
  • Chowgan landing field (Places to visit · 1 to 2 hours) — The ground is flat and the cafés nearby offer seats, so this suits older visitors well. Stay clear of the landing zone itself, keep children close, and be alert for pilots coming in low.
  • Deer Park Institute (Culture and craft · 1 hour to a full day, depending on the programme) — The campus is on level village ground in the colony and the walk from the main lane is short. Seating for teachings varies by programme, so ask about chairs if floor seating is hard.
  • Green Guest House & Hygienic Restaurant (Food and restaurants · 45 to 60 minutes) — Level, short walk from the colony lanes, and a simple seated meal with no queue. Facilities are modest, so check seating and restrooms if you have specific needs.

Some walking — plan a break (3)

  • Billing take-off meadow (Sports · 2 to 3 hours including the drive up, longer if you fly) — The road up is steep and winding, so choose an experienced local driver. The meadow itself is open grass with little shelter or seating, it is windy, and it is cold at 2,400 m even when Bir is warm. Tandem flying involves a few running steps at launch, so older travellers should ask the operator candidly about suitability.
  • Dharmalaya Institute (Culture and craft · A day or a week-long workshop) — The campus is in the hills above Bir, so expect slopes and uneven paths, and work or workshop sessions can be physical. Ask in advance about accommodation, accessibility and what is manageable.
  • Palpung Sherabling Monastery (Places of worship · 1.5 to 2 hours) — The grounds are spread out and include some steps and slopes between old and new sections. A vehicle to the main gate helps, benches and shade are limited, and shoes come off for the shrine hall.

Lots of walking or steps — choose carefully (1)

  • Rajgundha Valley (Places to visit · A full day; overnight is more relaxed) — The road is narrow and partly off-road, taking roughly 1.5 to 2 hours by vehicle, and the last stretch may need a short trek. It is tiring for older travellers and not recommended for anyone with limited mobility or heart conditions.

Practical tips for Bir Billing

  • Weather and layers. Bir is mild in autumn but Billing at about 2,400 m is much colder and windier. Carry a windproof jacket, and expect heavy rain from July to September.
  • Getting up to Billing. The road is steep and winding. Hire an experienced local driver or go with a flying operator's vehicle, and agree the return time before setting out.
  • Choosing a paragliding operator. Compare several, and ask about the pilot's experience, the age of the glider and whether a reserve parachute is carried. Accept a cancelled flight if conditions are poor.
  • Monastery etiquette. Dress modestly, remove shoes before halls, walk stupas and prayer wheels clockwise and ask before photographing, particularly inside prayer halls.
  • Permits for foreign nationals. Foreign visitors staying in the Tibetan Colony may need a Protected Area Permit. Check the current rules with an official source before you arrive.
  • Money. Carry cash for small shops, taxis and pottery or tea purchases, since card acceptance is patchy. ATMs are limited, so withdraw in a larger town first.
  • Getting around. Taxis and autos work for short trips and buses run along the main road. For Billing, Baijnath and day trips a car and driver is the easiest option.
  • Monsoon and landslides. July and August bring heavy rain, and hill roads can be disrupted. If you travel then, keep plans flexible and check road conditions before long drives.
