The short answer

Bobbili Fort: what visitors should know first

Go for the story of the 1757 battle and the Indo-Saracenic palaces. Allow a morning, expect parts to be closed because offices use them, and confirm museum access on arrival.

History and context

The story behind Bobbili Fort

In 1756 rivalry between the chiefs of Bobbili and Vizianagaram led to a rebellion. In 1757 the French general Bussy attacked with European troops and about 11,000 men from Vizianagaram, breached the mud fort with cannon and took the ramparts. The Vizianagaram raja entered Bobbili, and three days later Tandra Paparayudu and two accomplices attacked the camp at night and killed him.\n\nChinna Ranga Rao, the dead raja's brother, later regained the holdings under a 1759 compromise. His successors built the present fort in the mid-19th century, and a stone monument was erected in 1891.

Why it matters

Why Bobbili Fort is worth your time

Bobbili Fort is a record of one of the most remembered local episodes in coastal Andhra. In 1757 the Bobbili chief refused Bussy's offer of pardon and was defeated, and Tandra Paparayudu then avenged the defeat by killing the Vizianagaram raja. That story has become part of Telugu folklore.\n\nThe complex also shows the later recovery of the family, who rebuilt in stone in the mid-19th century. For a traveller, it is a rare example of a zamindari fort-palace that is still lived around and used.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Start at the north-eastern entrance, a tall domed gateway with mantapas, then walk through the grounds. Four main buildings are described: the Durbar Hall where crowning ceremonies took place, a prince's palace, a guest palace, and the three-storey palace of the Raja, which is the largest. The main palace is said to house a museum and family offices, and the Prangmahal is decorated with tapestries, paintings and porcelain from several countries.\n\nTwo temples stand within the complex, including the Venugopala Swamy temple, and the Vasant Mandapa stands in a lake and dates to 1825. A stone monument raised in 1891 commemorates the tragedy of 1757.\n\nTake your time with the story. The old mud fort was breached by cannon, and the stone fort you see was built afterwards. Ask staff which parts are open before you go in.
