The short answer
Vizianagaram Fort: what visitors should know first
A good half-day add-on from Bobbili if you want the other side of the 1757 story. Go in the morning, view mostly from outside and confirm what is open.
History and context
The story behind Vizianagaram Fort
The fort was built in 1713 by Maharaja Vijay Ram Raju, also known as Ananda Raju I. The site was reportedly suggested by a Muslim saint, Mahabub Valli, and the foundation date was chosen as auspicious on Vijaya Dasami.

Why it matters
Why Vizianagaram Fort is worth your time
Vizianagaram Fort belongs to the same story as Bobbili, from the other side. The Vizianagaram rajas whose forces defeated Bobbili in 1757 ruled from here.\n\nSeeing it helps explain the political rivalry and the scale of the two kingdoms. The fort is also a reminder of how the old royal complexes of coastal Andhra have been put to new uses, as colleges, offices and a small museum, rather than preserved as monuments. Read together with Bobbili Fort, it gives both sides of a story that is still told locally.

Plan your visit
How to experience it
Begin at the east gate, the Nagar khana, the most elaborate entrance with a drum tower used to announce royal orders. Walk the walls and look at the bastions at the four corners; the fort was once surrounded by a moat.\n\nInside, find the Moti Mahal, the royal durbar hall of 1869, which houses a museum of the former rulers' artefacts. The Lakshmi temple, Kota Shakto, was where rajas prayed before war. The clock tower, Ganta Stambham, is just outside.\n\nThe west gate leads to royal tombs and the former moat is now a park. Respect that colleges and police use parts of the complex.
