The short answer

Baclayon Church: what visitors should know first

Yes, it is an easy first stop out of Tagbilaran. Plan about an hour, dress modestly, and visit the museum in the convent. It is active, so avoid Mass times unless you wish to attend.

History and context

The story behind Baclayon Church

Jesuits Juan de Torres and Gabriel Sánchez arrived in 1596, and Baclayon became the oldest Christian settlement in Bohol. It became a parish in 1717, and the present coral stone church was finished in 1727. The Augustinian Recollects took over from the Jesuits in 1768 and renovated it. It was declared a National Historical Landmark in 1994 and a National Cultural Treasure in 2010.

The 2013 earthquake caused the portico and bell tower to collapse. The National Historical Commission rebuilt the church from 2014 to 2018, and it reopened on 27 February 2018.

Why it matters

Why Baclayon Church is worth your time

Baclayon is the oldest Christian settlement in Bohol, and its church shows how the Spanish missionary orders shaped the island's towns. The coral-stone building, finished in 1727, is a National Historical Landmark and National Cultural Treasure.

The church also tells a modern story: the 2013 earthquake brought down the portico and bell tower, and the restoration shows how carefully the community and the heritage commission rebuilt it. For travellers, it is a quiet place to see how history and faith are still linked in everyday Bohol life.

How to experience it

Baclayon Church is the Immaculate Conception Parish Church, built of coral stone and finished in 1727. It stands facing the sea, with a plaza in front and the convento beside it, which now houses an ecclesiastical museum. Walk around the exterior first, then go inside to see the altar and ceiling.

The church was heavily damaged in the 15 October 2013 earthquake, when the portico and bell tower collapsed, and was rebuilt between 2014 and 2018 by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines. The reopening took place on 27 February 2018. Read the display boards to see what was rebuilt and what is original.

Dress modestly and keep your voice low, because the church is a working parish. The museum in the convento has religious artefacts and is worth a short visit. After the church, you can walk along the waterfront in Baclayon.
