History and context
The story behind Loboc Church
Jesuit Father Juan de Torres established a mission at Loboc in late 1596, and it became a parish in 1602. A fire destroyed the original wooden church in 1638, and the present coral stone church was finished in 1734. It was declared a National Historical Landmark in December 1998 and a National Cultural Treasure in July 2001. After severe damage in the 2013 earthquake, restoration began in 2017 and the church reopened on 16 May 2021.

Why it matters
Why Loboc Church is worth your time
Loboc was an early Jesuit mission, established in late 1596 and a parish from 1602. The present coral stone church was finished in 1734 after a fire in 1638 destroyed the original wooden building. It is a National Historical Landmark (1998) and a National Cultural Treasure (2001).
The 2013 earthquake severely damaged it, partly collapsing the façade and tower, and work began in 2017. The church reopened on 16 May 2021. For visitors, it is a useful stop for understanding why the river town exists and how much of Bohol's heritage has been rebuilt.

How to experience it
Walk to the church from the cruise dock or the main road. The coral stone façade follows the style of San Ignacio Church in Intramuros, and the interior has ceiling paintings made in 1926 and 1927 by Canuto Ávila and his sons.
The detached bell tower stands near the riverbank and holds seven bells. The convent includes the Loboc Museum on its third floor, with religious artefacts. Wikipedia describes it as the only three-storey convent in the Philippines.
Be quiet and respectful because the church is a working parish. Combine it with the river cruise, either before or after, and leave time for the museum if stairs are not a problem.
Plan with confidence
Visit as a guest, not a spectator.
