How to reach Bomdila by air

Guwahati (GAU) is the main airport, about 320 km from Bomdila by road, usually most of a day. Tezpur (TEZ) in Assam is closer, about 160 km, but flights there have been limited, so check current schedules before relying on it.

How to reach Bomdila by train

Rangapara North (RPAN) in Assam is the usual railhead, roughly 145 km away. Guwahati has many more long-distance trains. There is no railway line in Bomdila itself.

How to reach Bomdila by road

Bomdila is on NH13, which climbs from Bhalukpong on the Assam border through Bomdila to Dirang and onwards over Sela Pass to Tawang. Tawang is about 167 km further. Landslides can close stretches in the monsoon.

Getting around Bomdila

A hired car with a local driver is easiest for the highway and for side trips. Shared taxis and buses run along the route, and the town centre is walkable though steep.

For parents and senior travellers

Easy transfers to and in Bomdila

  • Treat the first evening as rest: at roughly 2,400 m, headaches and tiredness are common after a rapid drive from the plains. Drink water and skip alcohol.
  • Break the long highway drive into stages. Rest stops with clean toilets are few between Bhalukpong and Bomdila, so plan them.
  • Carry regular medicines for the whole trip plus a spare supply; pharmacies in small hill towns may not stock everything.
  • Sort your Inner Line Permit or Protected Area Permit well before travelling, and carry printed copies and photo ID.
  • Ask the airline or railway for wheelchair or porter assistance when you book, not on the day.
  • Pre-book the pickup from the airport or station, so nobody has to negotiate with drivers after a long journey.
  • Choose arrivals in daylight where you can, and keep the first afternoon free to rest.
