Plan 01
1 day in Bomdila
- 01
Day 1: Monastery morning, ridge afternoon
Start at the Upper Gompa of Gentse Gaden Rabgyel Ling while the morning prayers are likely to be under way, and give it an hour or more. Drive down to the Lower Gompa near the main market and spin the prayer wheels, then have lunch in town. In the afternoon, visit the district craft centre if it is open and go up to a viewpoint on the ridge for the evening light, weather allowing. Keep the evening quiet; the altitude is enough work for one day.
Stop Time needed Walking Best time Upper Gompa (Gentse Gaden Rabgyel Ling) 1 to 1.5 hours Moderate Morning, when prayers are more likely to be under way; clear spring and autumn days for the views Lower Gompa 30 to 45 minutes Easy Late afternoon or evening, or after the Upper Gompa Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.
With parents at Upper Gompa (Gentse Gaden Rabgyel Ling): A vehicle can take you close, but there are steps and slopes within the complex and few places to sit. At roughly 2,400 m, older visitors should pace themselves and keep warm; cold floors in prayer halls make socks useful.

Day 3: Nature or a longer excursion
Choose between a long day trip to the Sessa Orchid Sanctuary and Eaglenest Wildlife Sanctuary, for orchids and birds, or a drive towards Lhagyala Gompa at Morshing. Both are long on rough roads, so confirm access and permits first and start early.
Stop Time needed Walking Best time Sessa Orchid Sanctuary Most of a day Demanding Winter Eaglenest Wildlife Sanctuary Full day or longer Demanding Check with a local guide; winter and spring are common birding seasons Pace: Sessa Orchid Sanctuary and Eaglenest Wildlife Sanctuary involve a lot of walking or steps — do them early, and keep the rest of the day light.
With parents at Sessa Orchid Sanctuary: Roads and trails are rough and facilities are basic. Not recommended for people with limited mobility.
With parents at Eaglenest Wildlife Sanctuary: Unpaved, one-lane roads and basic facilities make it hard for older or less mobile travellers.

Guides for the stops on these routes
Pacing
Pacing a Bomdila trip for parents and children
- Treat the first evening as rest: at roughly 2,400 m, headaches and tiredness are common after a rapid drive from the plains. Drink water and skip alcohol.
- The Upper Gompa and the Lower Gompa are reachable by vehicle, but expect steps and slopes once inside. Take a stick if you use one, and move slowly.
- Pack warm layers even in spring and autumn. Nights are cold, and many rooms have limited heating, so ask about a heater or blankets in advance.
- Break the long highway drive into stages. Rest stops with clean toilets are few between Bhalukpong and Bomdila, so plan them.
- Carry regular medicines for the whole trip plus a spare supply; pharmacies in small hill towns may not stock everything.
- Sort your Inner Line Permit or Protected Area Permit well before travelling, and carry printed copies and photo ID.
