Buldhana is a district headquarters in the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra, at about 640 m above sea level, which keeps it a little cooler than the plains around it. It has about ninety thousand residents and works mainly as an administrative and market town.

Visitors come for what lies around it. Lonar Lake, a meteorite-impact crater, is about 100 km away; the Gajanan Maharaj shrine at Shegaon is about 75 km away; Sindkhed Raja, the birthplace of Jijabai, is about 90 km away. Closer to town, Dnyanganga Wildlife Sanctuary lies about 20 km away.

There is little to do in the town itself, so Buldhana suits travellers who want a base for road trips rather than a place to linger. Hotels are simple, and a car is almost essential.

Winter is the best season, with mild days and clear skies. Summers are very hot, and the monsoon makes forest and rural roads slow.

Food is simple Vidarbha cooking: dal, rice, jowar or wheat roti, bharit, pithla-bhakri and spicy thecha. There is no tourist restaurant street, so ask your lodging for the best local thali and carry water on day trips. Chai and fresh fruit from roadside sellers are safe, easy stops.

Choose without overthinking

Which Buldhana experience is right for your trip?

Most plans get crowded because nobody is willing to choose. These comparisons make the trade-offs clear.

Lonar or Shegaon, if you only have time for one?

Pick Lonar for the crater and temples. Pick Shegaon for a well-organised pilgrimage and a gentler day.

Dnyanganga or Lonar for nature?

Dnyanganga is a forest with little infrastructure and rare sightings; Lonar is a famous lake that needs no luck.

Stay in Buldhana or Shegaon?

Buldhana is central for several trips. Shegaon is better if pilgrimage is your main aim.
