Before you go

Can Tho with elderly parents: what to know

  • Book a boat to Cai Rang the evening before and ask the hotel to confirm a time. Boarding from the wharf steps can be slippery, so wear shoes with a grip and ask the crew for a hand.
  • Dawn is cool, but by 10 am the humidity builds. Be back for breakfast and a rest by then, and keep the afternoon for gentle indoor or shaded stops.
  • Carry any regular medicines in their original packaging and bring travel insurance with medical cover. For serious problems, ask your hotel to direct you to the nearest major hospital in the city.
  • Floating market boats are small and have little seating. Choose a boat with a canopy and life jackets, and avoid the very smallest rowing boats if balance is a concern.
  • Rush-hour traffic is heavy and pavements are uneven. Cross roads slowly, with a local helper if possible, and use a taxi rather than walking long distances in the heat.
  • Strict vegetarians should message the hotel ahead and note a few Vietnamese phrases, and keep snacks for long boat mornings.

Easiest first

Places in Can Tho sorted by walking effort

Easy on the legs (8)

  • Binh Thuy Ancient House (Culture and craft · 45 minutes to 1 hour) — The grounds and rooms are on a small scale, with limited seating and some steps at thresholds. The heat is the main issue, so choose the cooler hours.
  • Cai Rang Floating Market (Places to visit · 3 to 4 hours including the boat journey) — There is little walking, but boarding a small boat from wharf steps can be awkward and boats offer little seating. The dawn start and rocking motion suit most fit older travellers; a canopy boat with a life jacket is wise.
  • Can Tho Bridge (Places to visit · 30 minutes as a viewpoint) — Viewing from a car, a boat or the riverbank needs little walking. Roadside verges are narrow and traffic is heavy, so do not walk on the bridge.
  • Ngon Vegan Bistro and Cafe (Food and restaurants · 45 minutes to 1 hour) — It is in the central riverfront area, a short flat walk from the wharf. Seating and step access were not confirmed, so ask when you arrive.
  • Ninh Kieu Wharf and Riverfront (Places to visit · 1 to 2 hours) — The promenade is flat and has benches and shade in parts, which makes it one of the easiest outings in the city. Evenings can be warm and busy, and the pier steps need care.
  • Ong Pagoda (Places of worship · 20 to 40 minutes) — The temple is a short flat walk from the riverfront, with a small courtyard and steps at the entrance. Incense smoke can be heavy, and seating is limited.
  • Phong Dien Floating Market (Places to visit · Half a day including travel) — Travel is by car, followed by a short boat ride. Boarding can be awkward, and there is little shade or seating. The market is calmer than Cai Rang.
  • Xuan Khanh Hot Pot Alley (Food and restaurants · 1 to 1.5 hours) — The lane is flat but narrow and busy, with plastic stools and little shade. The heat from the pot adds to a warm evening; ask for a fan or an inside table.

Practical tips for Can Tho

  • Dawn start. Floating markets are busiest in the early morning and thin out after about 8 am. Book the boat the day before and plan a rest at midday.
  • Heat and rain. Highs reach the low 30s Celsius all year. From May to November expect afternoon downpours; carry a light rain jacket and a small waterproof pouch for phones.
  • Getting around. Use metered taxis or ride-hailing apps in the city, and agree prices for boats and cars before starting. Have your hotel write the destination in Vietnamese.
  • Money. Vietnam uses the dong. Carry small notes for boats, stalls and pagodas, and check current exchange rates; cards are accepted in hotels and larger restaurants.
  • Dress. Light, loose cotton clothes suit the climate. Cover shoulders and knees in temples and pagodas and remove shoes where asked.
  • Food and water. Drink bottled or boiled water and be cautious with ice and raw salads. Vegetarians should say an chay and check for fish sauce.
  • Photography. Ask before photographing vendors at close range, and keep phones and cameras secure on boats.
  • Flood season. September and October are the wettest months, and high tides can flood low streets. Ask your hotel about conditions before an early trip.
