Canggu is a coastal village in North Kuta district, Badung Regency, about 10 km north-west of Kuta and 12 km from Denpasar. Tourism here began around 1990, when a surfing event brought visitors to what were then rice paddies and coconut groves. Since the early 2020s it has become one of the most popular parts of Bali, and the name now stretches to cover a roughly 8 km coastal strip from Berawa to Cemagi, taking in Batu Bolong, Echo Beach and Pererenan.
The beaches are dark grey to black sand and are better for surf, sunsets and walks than for casual swimming. Currents and shore-break are strong, so families usually swim in a hotel pool and use the beach for the evening. Two old sea temples, Pura Batu Bolong and Pura Batu Mejan, sit on the shore and are still used for worship, which is a useful reminder that this is a Balinese village before it is a lifestyle district.
The character is informal: cafes, surf shops, yoga studios, beach clubs and villas, with rice fields still showing between them. The trade-off is traffic. Lanes are narrow, most movement is by scooter, and growth has strained roads, water and waste handling. For Indian families and older travellers, Canggu works best as a few relaxed beach days with a car and driver, a comfortable hotel with a pool, and day trips to Tanah Lot or Ubud. It is not a place for a packed sightseeing list, and not an obvious first choice for anyone who needs flat pavements.
Food is mostly Western cafe and Indonesian warung cooking. Vegetarian and plant-based choices are easy to find, while Indian and strictly Jain food is thin here, so many visitors drive to Seminyak for Indian dinners. Plan on roughly three nights, and book hotels and drivers early for July and August.
