Plan 01
1 day in Cat Ba
- 01
Day 1: Lan Ha Bay by boat, town in the evening
Take a morning boat from the harbour for a Lan Ha Bay day trip, ideally a covered boat with a seat in the shade. Ask the operator for a short kayak or swim stop only if everyone is comfortable with it. Return in the afternoon, rest, then walk the flat harbour front at sunset and have a seafood dinner, or vegetable and tofu dishes if you eat vegetarian.

2 days in Cat Ba

Day 1: Lan Ha Bay and Monkey Island
Spend the morning and early afternoon on Lan Ha Bay with a stop at one of the quiet beaches. If Monkey Island is on the route, keep food out of sight and do not feed the macaques. Return to town for a late rest and an easy dinner by the harbour.
Stop Time needed Walking Best time Monkey Island (Dao Khi) 1 to 2 hours as a stop Moderate Dry, calm days; April to May and October to November Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.
With parents at Monkey Island (Dao Khi): Landing is usually from a boat onto a beach or small jetty, and the trail is uneven. The beach itself is easy for a rest, but keep food out of sight because of the macaques.
- 02
Day 2: National park, Hospital Cave and Cannon Fort
Go to the national park early, before the heat, for the short nature walk or the viewing peak if everyone is fit. Visit Hospital Cave in the late morning and have lunch back in town. Finish at Cannon Fort in the late afternoon for the view over the bay, taking a vehicle up if you can.
Stop Time needed Walking Best time Hospital Cave 45 to 60 minutes Moderate Late morning, when it is hot outside; the cave stays cool Cannon Fort (Point 177) 1 to 1.5 hours Moderate Late afternoon on a clear day Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.
With parents at Hospital Cave: The approach is a steep set of steps, and inside there are narrow passages and several levels. Handrails exist in parts, but anyone with knee or breathing problems may prefer to wait outside.
With parents at Cannon Fort (Point 177): A paved road leads up, so cars and motorbikes can reach the top, but the site has uneven paths, steps up to the observation points and little shade. Choose a vehicle over walking.
Plan 03
3 days in Cat Ba
- 01
Day 1: Arrive, harbour and beaches
Arrive by ferry or hydrofoil from Hai Phong, check in, and walk to Cat Co 1 beach and the harbour front. Keep the first afternoon free.
- 02
Day 2: Lan Ha Bay and Cai Beo
Take a full boat day on Lan Ha Bay, with a stop at Cai Beo, the fishing settlement about 2 km from town, and a beach swim if the weather is kind.
- 03
Day 3: Park, caves and fort
Visit the national park and Trung Trang Cave in the morning, Hospital Cave before lunch, and Cannon Fort for the late light. Leave the viewing peak for those who want a longer walk.
Stop Time needed Walking Best time Trung Trang Cave 30 to 60 minutes Moderate Morning, combined with the national park Hospital Cave 45 to 60 minutes Moderate Late morning, when it is hot outside; the cave stays cool Cannon Fort (Point 177) 1 to 1.5 hours Moderate Late afternoon on a clear day Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.
With parents at Trung Trang Cave: A paved jungle path climbs roughly 100 to 140 steps to the entrance, then the cave path is solid but has low sections where you stoop. The interior is damp, so footing can be slippery.
With parents at Hospital Cave: The approach is a steep set of steps, and inside there are narrow passages and several levels. Handrails exist in parts, but anyone with knee or breathing problems may prefer to wait outside.

Guides for the stops on these routes
Pacing
Pacing a Cat Ba trip for parents and children
- Choose a hotel on the flat harbour front or with a lift; the town has steps, uneven pavements and heavy motorbike traffic.
- Take a taxi or hotel car to Cannon Fort and the national park, and walk only the short sections. The viewing peak trail is muddy after rain and is best left to fit walkers.
- Choose a covered boat with fixed seats for Lan Ha Bay. Ask how you board and whether there is a handrail, as step heights vary between boats.
- Carry a rain layer and a hat; the island can switch from sun to heavy rain within an hour, especially from May to September.
- Travel insurance with medical cover and evacuation matters here. We could not verify the capacity of hospitals on the island, so assume serious care means Hai Phong or Hanoi.
- Bring your regular medicines in labelled original packaging, plus travel sickness tablets for the ferry or boat.
