Cat Ba is the largest island of an archipelago of more than 360 limestone islands in the Gulf of Tonkin, and it belongs to Hai Phong, not to neighbouring Quang Ninh. Its south-eastern edge opens onto Lan Ha Bay, which has the same stacked karst scenery as Ha Long Bay. The archipelago has been part of the Ha Long Bay and Cat Ba Archipelago World Heritage Site since 2023, and it has been a UNESCO biosphere reserve since 2004.
The island is not a single-sight destination. About two-thirds of it is national park, with forest trails, a viewing peak and the last wild population of the Cat Ba langur, a critically endangered primate that numbers well under a hundred. The rest is a working harbour town, a ring of small beaches within a short walk or ride of the town, and fishing settlements across the water. Wartime history sits in the hills: a three-storey hospital hidden inside a cave and a hilltop fort with bunkers.
For Indian families, Cat Ba works as a calmer second stop after Hanoi or Ha Long Bay rather than a first. It suits two nights better than one. Boat days on Lan Ha Bay carry the most reward, and they are gentle if you pick a covered boat, a calm day and a plain itinerary. The town itself is small, with steps, uneven pavements and plenty of motorbikes, so older travellers should choose a hotel on the flat harbour front or close to it.
Food is the practical weak point for vegetarians. The island is built on seafood, and we could not verify any fully vegetarian, Jain or Indian restaurant on Cat Ba, so we have tagged none. Plan to eat vegetarian Vietnamese dishes, ask hotels to cook to your needs, and carry snacks for boat days.
Treat the facts here as checked at the time of writing. Visa rules, ferry timetables and park rules change, so confirm each with an official or operator source before you book.

How many days do you have?
Cat Ba itinerary
One good day
1 day in Cat Ba
Take a morning boat from the harbour for a Lan Ha Bay day trip, ideally a covered boat with a seat in the shade. Ask the operator for a short kayak or swim stop only if everyone is comfortable with it. Return in the afternoon, rest, then walk the flat harbour front at sunset and have a seafood dinner, or vegetable and tofu dishes if you eat vegetarian.
Day-by-day plan →Two days
2 days in Cat Ba
Spend the morning and early afternoon on Lan Ha Bay with a stop at one of the quiet beaches. If Monkey Island is on the route, keep food out of sight and do not feed the macaques. Return to town for a late rest and an easy dinner by the harbour.
Day-by-day plan →Three unhurried days
3 days in Cat Ba
Arrive by ferry or hydrofoil from Hai Phong, check in, and walk to Cat Co 1 beach and the harbour front. Keep the first afternoon free.
