Why it matters
Why Cat Co beaches is worth your time
The beaches are part of why Cat Ba suits a slow, family-friendly trip. After a morning on a boat or in the caves, they give a place to rest within a short ride of town, without having to commit to a full resort stay.
They also show how the island has changed since the 1990s. Electricity arrived in 1997, ferries began to carry vehicles, and tourism grew rapidly from 2001. The resorts on Cat Co 1 to 3 are part of that growth, and a short visit shows both the pleasant side and the building pressure on a protected archipelago.

Plan your visit
How to experience it
The Cat Co bays lie close to town, and you can reach them on foot if you are fit or by taxi or hotel car. Wikivoyage notes that the waves are not good for surfing, so treat them as places for a calm dip or for sitting by the water.
Choose your bay according to what you want. Cat Co 1 is the one pictured and named most often. Cat Co 2 is linked to a resort stretch, and Cat Co 3 has a larger resort. Hotels on these bays make a quieter base than the harbour front, although you will depend on transport for dinner.
Go in the late afternoon, when the heat eases and the hills catch the light. Keep valuables with you, ask whether loungers carry a charge, and stay within sight of lifeguards or swimmers. Pair it with Cannon Fort, which rises directly above the beaches.
Plan with confidence
Small decisions that make the visit easier.
- Ask about steps before choosing a bay
- Do not leave valuables on the sand
- Check for lifeguards and calm conditions
- Confirm whether loungers are charged
- Return to town by taxi after dark
