The short answer
Cat Ba National Park: what visitors should know first
Yes, if you like green, quiet places and can manage some slopes. Go early, wear shoes with grip, and keep expectations modest on wildlife: the langur is critically endangered and rarely seen by day visitors.
History and context
The story behind Cat Ba National Park
The park was created in 1986 under a decision of Vietnam's Council of Ministers and is run by the city of Hai Phong from headquarters at Trung Trang. Its boundaries were redrawn in 2006 to cover the whole langur population, with special protection zones.
A conservation project for the langur began in November 2000 with European zoo partners, and reports say hunting stopped by the end of 2001.

Why it matters
Why Cat Ba National Park is worth your time
Cat Ba National Park was established on 31 March 1986 and later became part of a UNESCO biosphere reserve, then the 2023 World Heritage listing of the Ha Long Bay and Cat Ba Archipelago. It protects primary, secondary and mangrove forest on limestone, with more than 1,500 recorded plant species and 282 recorded animal species on land and in the surrounding sea.
It matters most as the last refuge of the Cat Ba langur, a primate found nowhere else. Hunting cut its numbers from thousands to about 40 by 2003, and it has since recovered only slightly, with estimates in the high sixties. A visit also shows that Cat Ba is more than a beach-and-boat island: the interior is real forest, and your ticket supports the people who keep it that way.
Highlights
What not to miss
- 01
Peak viewing tower
The climb is the park's main effort and reward. The tower looks over forested ridges to the sea, but the path is slippery after rain.
- 02
The frog pond walk
A shorter, gentler path near the pond. It is the better choice for children and older relatives, especially in the wet season.
- 03
The langur story
Ask the staff or a guide about the Cat Ba langur. Knowing its history makes the forest feel less like scenery.
Plan your visit
How to experience it
Treat the park as a morning outing. Go by hotel car or taxi along the cross-island road, which runs through the forest towards the park headquarters at Trung Trang. Start before the heat builds, carry water and wear shoes with a proper sole, because rock and leaf litter are slippery.
There are two broad choices. The first is the walk to the viewing tower on the peak, which sources describe as a round trip of about 1.5 to 2 hours and which becomes muddy after rain. From the top you see the forested ridges and the sea beyond. The second is the shorter nature walk near the frog pond, better in the wet season, which suits families with children and older relatives who want shade without a climb.
If you want to learn about wildlife, take a guide. Civets, deer, macaques and squirrels are the mammals most often seen, and the park lies on a bird migration route. Do not expect to see the langur on a day visit, and never feed any animal. Pair the park with Trung Trang Cave and Hospital Cave, which sit along the same road, to make one efficient circuit.
Plan with confidence
Small decisions that make the visit easier.

Will I see the Cat Ba langur?
Probably not. Fewer than 70 animals remain, in remote limestone areas, and day visitors rarely see them. Treat any sighting as luck.
Is the park suitable for elderly visitors?
Parts of it. The peak trail is steep and muddy in places, but the shorter nature walk and a drive through the forest are manageable.
How long should I allow?
About half a day with the caves, or 2 hours if you only do the peak walk.
