Cavelossim Beach lies at the southern end of the Salcete coast, about 15 km south of Margao. The village sits on a narrow strip between the Arabian Sea to the west and the River Sal to the east, and the beach has white sand with outcrops of dark lava rock. It is busier than the far-south beaches in the peak months, but it is generally calmer than the big North Goa strips, and most visitors come for rest rather than nightlife.
The beach runs into Mobor Beach to the south, a walk of about 15 minutes, where the Sal meets the sea at a sandbar. Carmona lies to the north. Most of the area's large resorts sit along the beach road and at Mobor, so the village feels like a resort strip with a parish church and a few shops behind it. Seasonal shacks serve seafood on the sand, and a handful of restaurants and cafés sit on the river and the road.
Swimming needs care. Goa's state lifeguard agency, Drishti Marine, posts lifesavers on many beaches in season and red flags show when entering the water is unsafe. During the monsoon, sea swimming, coastal water sports and fishing are prohibited. Check at your hotel whether a lifeguard is on duty on your stretch before you swim.
The river is the second reason to come. Boat trips run through the Sal backwaters and out to sea, with dolphins sighted on some trips, and the ruined fort and lighthouse at Betul sit just across the water. With a car and driver the trip works for families and for older travellers who want comfort over activity.
