Why it matters
Why Budher Caves and Moila Top is worth your time
Moila Top and the Budher area sit high in the Jaunsar hills, where forest gives way to open grassland used by local herders. The small temple and the offerings fixed to its door are a reminder that the area belongs to local religious life, not only to trekkers.
The caves are a geological curiosity in a region otherwise known for forest and temples. Reported lengths and the origin of the name Miola vary between sources, so we offer no exact figures. For most visitors the lasting memory is the walk itself: the sound of cattle bells, the thin cold air and a wide sky, which suit people who like space and silence more than headline attractions.
Highlights
What not to miss
- 01
Moila meadow
An open alpine meadow with a pond and grazing animals, reached after a steady forest climb.
- 02
The small temple
A wooden shrine at the meadow, where locals nail offerings to the door; treat it as a living place of worship.
- 03
The limestone caves
Cave passages with stalactites and bats, visited only on guided trips and not suited to everyone.
Plan your visit
How to experience it
Hire a driver in Chakrata and set off early. The route takes the Tyuni road, then turns off through forest villages towards the Budher forest rest house. Quoted distances vary from about 22 to 40 km, so allow a long drive and confirm the route locally rather than relying on mapping apps.
From the rest house, a walk of about 2.5 km on an unpaved forest path leads up to the meadows of Moila Top at roughly 2,800 m. Guides describe a clear pond, grazing animals, including horses, and a small wooden temple where offerings such as goat horns and coins are fixed to the door. Spend your time here walking slowly, resting and looking out; there is nothing to buy and no shelter.
The limestone caves nearby, known as the Budher or Miola caves, are a separate matter. Accounts describe stalactites, stalagmites, bats and waterlogged sections, and one national travel magazine calls entering without an expert local guide extremely dangerous. If you want to go in, arrange a guide in Chakrata beforehand, carry torches and wear proper footwear. If not, the meadow alone makes the trip worthwhile.
