Chakrata is a small cantonment town at about 2,118 m in the Jaunsar-Bawar hills of Dehradun district, between the Yamuna and Tons rivers. The British Indian Army set up the cantonment in 1869, and the army still shapes the place: tidy roads, a limited number of hotels, and an unhurried feel that bigger hill stations lost long ago.
Its appeal is forest and quiet rather than a list of sights. Tiger Falls, the deodar forest at Deoban, the Chilmiri sunset viewpoint and the high meadows of Moila Top are all within a day's reach of town. Further out, old temples such as Lakhamandal and the wooden-fronted Mahasu Devta temple at Hanol reflect the local Jaunsari culture, which is closer to Himachal's Sirmaur than to neighbouring Garhwal.
One rule matters before you plan anything. Chakrata is an access-restricted cantonment and, according to the sources we checked, only Indian nationals may enter. Foreign visitors are reported to be allowed as far as Kalsi, where the Ashokan rock edict stands, and need a permit to go further. Confirm the current position with the authorities in Dehradun before you travel.
The town suits slow trips. It has limited facilities, patchy mobile signal in places and long drives to the outlying sights, so go with a driver, book rooms ahead and keep days short. Travellers with parents will find the town and the viewpoint easy, while the falls, Budher and Hanol are best treated as optional extras.
