Plan 01
1 day in Chakrata
- 01
Day 1: Town, forest and sunset
Reach Chakrata early from Dehradun, or stay the night before. Spend the morning at Deoban, where tall deodar trees and open glades suit a slow walk. Return for a late lunch, rest, and walk through the Sadar Bazaar for tea and woollens. Finish at Chilmiri Neck for sunset if the sky is clear.
Stop Time needed Walking Best time Deoban Half a day Moderate March to June and October to early December; winter for snow, if the road is open Chilmiri Neck (Sunset Point) 1–2 hours Easy Late afternoon in clear weather, October to December and March to June Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.
With parents at Deoban: The viewpoints and forest tracks are mostly gentle, but the road in is rough and narrow, and the altitude (quoted at over 2,000 m) can tire people with heart or breathing conditions. There is little seating or shelter, and no medical help nearby.

Day 2: Tiger Falls
Leave early for Tiger Falls, check locally that the path is open, and allow time for the steps down and back. Return for lunch and a rest before the drive down to Dehradun in daylight.
Stop Time needed Walking Best time Tiger Falls 2–3 hours including the drive from town Demanding September to November for clear water and firm paths; July and August for the heaviest flow, but with landslide and slippery-path risk Pace: Tiger Falls involves a lot of walking or steps — do it early, and keep the rest of the day light.
With parents at Tiger Falls: The approach is a downhill walk of roughly 1–1.5 km (accounts vary) on steps and forest path, and you must climb back out. Few railings and little seating. Older travellers or anyone with knee trouble may prefer to enjoy the forest at the road end and skip the descent.

Day 3: Temples or Budher
Choose between the temple day (Lakhamandal and, if time allows, the long drive to Hanol) and the Budher and Moila Top trek, which needs a fit group and a guide for any cave visit. Return to Dehradun the next morning.

Pacing
Pacing a Chakrata trip for parents and children
- Check altitude and heart or breathing conditions with a doctor before you go; Chakrata is above 2,000 m and nights are cold.
- Choose a room with reliable heating and hot water, and confirm vehicle access to the door.
- Keep Tiger Falls, Budher and Hanol as optional days; Chilmiri Neck and the market are the easy options.
- Hire a driver who knows hill roads, and avoid night driving and the monsoon months.
- Carry regular medicines from Dehradun; pharmacies in town are limited and mobile signal can be patchy.
- Access rules: Sources report that only Indian nationals may enter Chakrata, with foreign visitors limited to Kalsi without a permit. Check the current rules and carry photo ID.
