Before you go

Chakrata with elderly parents: what to know

  • Check altitude and heart or breathing conditions with a doctor before you go; Chakrata is above 2,000 m and nights are cold.
  • Choose a room with reliable heating and hot water, and confirm vehicle access to the door.
  • Keep Tiger Falls, Budher and Hanol as optional days; Chilmiri Neck and the market are the easy options.
  • Hire a driver who knows hill roads, and avoid night driving and the monsoon months.
  • Carry regular medicines from Dehradun; pharmacies in town are limited and mobile signal can be patchy.

Easiest first

Places in Chakrata sorted by walking effort

Easy on the legs (5)

  • Chakrata Sadar Bazaar (Shopping · 1 hour) — The market is a short, mostly level walk, though lanes can be crowded with vehicles and slippery in rain. Benches are limited; small cafes and tea stalls offer places to sit.
  • Chilmiri Neck (Sunset Point) (Places to visit · 1–2 hours) — Mostly a drive or short walk along the road, with level ground at the viewpoint. Cold wind can be sharp after sunset and there is little seating or shelter, so wrap up and keep your visit short in winter.
  • Hanol Mahasu Devta Temple (Places of worship · Full day including the drive) — The temple compound is small and level, but the drive of several hours on winding mountain roads is the real effort. Steps and old timber floors can be slippery; there is little shade or seating.
  • Kalsi Ashokan Rock Edict (Places to visit · 30–45 minutes) — A short, level walk from the road to a small shelter. Few seats and limited shade. The long drive to and from Dehradun is the main effort.
  • Lakhamandal Temple (Places of worship · 45–90 minutes) — The complex is small and largely level, with short walks on uneven stone. Steps and old stonework can be slippery when wet. Few places to sit in the shade, and the road journey from Chakrata is the longer effort.

Some walking — plan a break (1)

  • Deoban (Places to visit · Half a day) — The viewpoints and forest tracks are mostly gentle, but the road in is rough and narrow, and the altitude (quoted at over 2,000 m) can tire people with heart or breathing conditions. There is little seating or shelter, and no medical help nearby.

Lots of walking or steps — choose carefully (2)

  • Budher Caves and Moila Top (Places to visit · Full day) — The walk of roughly 2.5 km from the rest house is on unpaved forest paths at around 2,800 m, so it is steep for some and tiring at altitude. There are no facilities, little help in an emergency and no seating. It is not suitable for people with mobility or breathing difficulties.
  • Tiger Falls (Places to visit · 2–3 hours including the drive from town) — The approach is a downhill walk of roughly 1–1.5 km (accounts vary) on steps and forest path, and you must climb back out. Few railings and little seating. Older travellers or anyone with knee trouble may prefer to enjoy the forest at the road end and skip the descent.

Small decisions

Practical tips for Chakrata

  • Access rules. Sources report that only Indian nationals may enter Chakrata, with foreign visitors limited to Kalsi without a permit. Check the current rules and carry photo ID.
  • Altitude and cold. The town is at about 2,118 m. Nights are cold even in summer, and winter brings snow. Pack layers and a windproof jacket.
  • Getting around. Hire a driver who knows hill roads. Several sights, including Deoban and Budher, are reached by rough tracks.
  • Road conditions. Monsoon landslides can close roads for hours or days. Avoid July and August, and avoid driving after dark.
  • Money and phones. Carry enough cash from Dehradun. ATMs may be limited and mobile signal is patchy in places, so tell your hotel your plans.
  • Medicines. Bring regular medicines. Pharmacies in town are small and the nearest large hospitals are in Dehradun.
  • Photography. Chakrata is a military cantonment. Avoid photographing army areas or personnel and follow local signs.
  • Booking ahead. Hotels are few and fill on weekends and holidays. Book early and confirm heating and vehicle access.
