The short answer

Kalika Mata Temple: what visitors should know first

Visit if you are comfortable with a climb and crowds. Take the ropeway, expect around 250 steps from the upper station, and avoid Navratri if you want a quieter darshan.

History and context

The story behind Kalika Mata Temple

The temple is dated to the 10th to 11th centuries. A Jain monk is recorded as consecrating the Mahakali image in 1055 CE. In the 15th century, after Mahmud Begada's conquest, the spire was replaced by a dargah dedicated to Sadan Shah Pir. A redevelopment of the temple was completed in 2022.

In June 2024, ancient Tirthankara idols along the stairway were vandalised, which led to protests and orders for restoration.

Why it matters

Why Kalika Mata Temple is worth your time

Pavagadh's shrine is one of the best known goddess temples in Gujarat, and many devotees regard it as a Shakti Peetha. Devotees come throughout the year, and the nine nights of Navratri in September and October are the busiest period.

What sets it apart is its mixed devotion. A dargah stands beside the shrine, and the hill is also sacred to Jains, whose temples stand lower down. The hill therefore shows how different traditions have shared the same landscape for centuries.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Most visitors reach the temple by ropeway and then climb about 250 steps. Go early; the queue for the ropeway is shorter and the steps are cooler. Pause at the resting points and take your time.

At the top, the shrine houses the goddess Mahakali, with Kalika and Bahucharamata beside her. The temple has been redeveloped recently, and the surroundings are tidy. Next to it stands a small dargah of Sadan Shah Pir, which draws pilgrims of its own and gives the site a notably mixed character.

The views over the plain are worth a moment, and the hill's forest and wind give a welcome break from the heat below. Allow time for the descent as well, and be ready for queues at the ropeway on the way back, especially at weekends.

Plan with confidence

Visit as a guest, not a spectator.

  • Check darshan timings and photography rules
  • Wear sturdy footwear for the steps
  • Avoid Navratri if you dislike crowds
  • Carry water and pause often

The steps from the ropeway station are steep and crowded, and there are no lifts. Older visitors who cannot manage them should consider the ropeway ride alone, or travel with a family member for support. The summit is cool relative to the plain, but the stone can be hot underfoot.
Tickets and access
There is no entry fee, though ropeway tickets are separate. Dress modestly, remove footwear at the temple, and check current darshan timings and photography rules. Leather items and mobile phones may be restricted; follow the signs.
