Champaner is a small town in Gujarat's Panchmahal district, about 47 km from Vadodara, and it is easy to underestimate. The Chavda dynasty is credited with founding it in the 8th century, and in the late 15th century Sultan Mahmud Begada took the neighbouring hill fortress of Pavagadh after a long siege and spent decades rebuilding the town below as a capital. What he left, together with the older Hindu and Jain remains on the hill above, is now the Champaner-Pavagadh Archaeological Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2004.
The visit comes in two parts. Below, the monuments are spread across fields and village lanes: the Jami Masjid with its twin minarets and carved screens, the court mosque of Sahar ki Masjid, ruined mosques such as Kevda and Nagina with their cenotaphs, a spiral stepwell and the old custom house. Above, Pavagadh hill carries the Kalika Mata temple, a neighbouring dargah and groups of Jain temples, reached by a ropeway and then a flight of steps.
Champaner is best done as a long day trip from Vadodara, which is the practical gateway for flights, trains, hotels and food. Ahmedabad is further away and has its own page, so treat it as a separate trip. The ruins are open and exposed, so start early, choose the cooler months, hire a car and a local guide, and decide in advance whether the hill is for you.
