Before you go

Champaner with elderly parents: what to know

  • Start early; the ruins are open fields with little shade, and heat builds quickly even in winter.
  • Hire a car and guide for the day; the monuments are scattered and signage is limited.
  • The lower monuments are mostly level; the hill is the difficult part, with about 250 steps after the ropeway.
  • Avoid Navratri (September to October) and weekends if you dislike crowds at the ropeway and temple.
  • Carry water, a hat and a seat stool; there are few benches or cafes at the monuments.
  • Check ropeway status on the day, especially in the monsoon.

Easiest first

Places in Champaner sorted by walking effort

Easy on the legs (3)

  • Ek Minar ki Masjid (Places to visit · 15–20 minutes) — A short walk on open ground and a few steps up the plinth. No seating or shade.
  • Mandvi (Custom House) (Places to visit · 20–30 minutes) — The building is mostly level with a short approach and plenty of shade inside the arcades, which is welcome. Surfaces are uneven stone in places.
  • Sahar ki Masjid (Places to visit · 30–45 minutes) — The route from the road is flat and short. Entry is across an open forecourt with no seating, so older visitors should bring a stool or plan to sit in the car afterwards. Some thresholds are uneven stone.

Some walking — plan a break (7)

  • Helical Stepwell (Places to visit · 20–30 minutes) — The upper rim is level and easy. The spiral stair is worn and steep in places, with no handrail we could confirm, so older visitors can look from the top or descend only partway.
  • Jambughoda Wildlife Sanctuary (Places to visit · Half a day; a full day or an overnight if you stay at the eco campsite) — The forest roads are reached by car and the rest-house area near the reservoir is flat enough for a slow stroll. Trails are earth paths with uneven footing, and shade and seating are limited away from the campsite. Carry water and avoid the hottest hours.
  • Jami Masjid (Places to visit · About 1 hour) — The approach is a short walk across open ground to a high plinth with a flight of steps, and there is no lift or ramp that we could confirm. Inside, the floor is level but very large, with little shade across the courtyard. Older visitors can enjoy the facade and the front hall without touring the whole building.
  • Kevda Masjid and Cenotaph (Places to visit · 40 minutes) — The ground between the car park and the monument is uneven and open, and the steps up to the platforms are worn. There is no shade or seating. Older visitors can enjoy the mosque front from the edge without climbing.
  • Lila Gumbaj ki Masjid (Places to visit · 30 minutes) — The platform is raised with a short flight of steps and the ground around is uneven. Shade from trees helps, but there is no seating.
  • Nagina Masjid (Places to visit · 30–40 minutes) — The approach is across open ground and the platform has steps with no handrails. There is no shade or seating, so older visitors may prefer a short visit with the car close by.
  • Pavagadh Ropeway (Places to visit · Ride about 6 minutes each way; allow 1–2 hours including queues) — The gondola is a big help for older visitors, and cabins are enclosed. The queue for the cabin can be long and the platform involves steps, and after arrival there are still around 250 steps to the temple. Those who cannot manage them should take the ride just for the view or arrange assistance.

Lots of walking or steps — choose carefully (2)

  • Kalika Mata Temple (Places of worship · 2–3 hours including ropeway and steps) — The steps from the ropeway station are steep and crowded, and there are no lifts. Older visitors who cannot manage them should consider the ropeway ride alone, or travel with a family member for support. The summit is cool relative to the plain, but the stone can be hot underfoot.
  • Pavagadh Jain Temples (Places of worship · 1–2 hours) — Reaching the temple groups involves steep, uneven paths with many steps. Older visitors should consider seeing only the nearest group or skipping the hill walk.

Practical tips for Champaner

  • Heat. The ruins are open and shade is limited. From March to June, visit only in the first hours after sunrise.
  • Getting around. Hire a car and driver from Vadodara for the day. The monuments are spread over several kilometres, and public transport is limited.
  • Guides. Signage is limited. An ASI-approved guide is worth arranging, and ask about the cost before you start.
  • Walking and steps. The lower monuments involve uneven ground and some steps. The hill adds about 250 steps after the ropeway.
  • Ropeway. Check that it is operating before you travel, particularly in the monsoon, and expect queues on weekends and during Navratri.
  • Dress and etiquette. Dress modestly, remove footwear at the temples and mosques where asked, and respect worshippers on the hill.
  • Money and tickets. Carry small cash; entry to the ASI monuments is ticketed, with different rates for Indian and foreign visitors. Check current prices on arrival.
  • Water and food. Carry bottled water and snacks; there are few facilities at the monuments.
