Day 1: Monuments in the morning, hill by the cable car
Leave Vadodara by 7 am to reach Champaner while it is cool. Start with the Jami Masjid, then see Sahar ki Masjid and the Mandvi custom house. Add the helical stepwell and, if you are keen, Kevda and Nagina Masjid with their cenotaphs. Have an early lunch and a rest, then drive to Machi and take the ropeway for the Kalika Mata temple. Return before dark. Older travellers may prefer to skip the hill and keep to the lower monuments.
Stop Time needed Walking Best time Jami Masjid About 1 hour Moderate Morning in November to February, when the sandstone is soft and the courtyard is not yet hot Sahar ki Masjid 30–45 minutes Easy Morning light, November to February Mandvi (Custom House) 20–30 minutes Easy Mid-morning, November to February Helical Stepwell 20–30 minutes Moderate Morning, November to February Nagina Masjid 30–40 minutes Moderate Early morning, November to February Kalika Mata Temple 2–3 hours including ropeway and steps Demanding Weekday mornings outside Navratri, October to March Pace: Kalika Mata Temple involves a lot of walking or steps — do it early, and keep the rest of the day light.
With parents at Jami Masjid: The approach is a short walk across open ground to a high plinth with a flight of steps, and there is no lift or ramp that we could confirm. Inside, the floor is level but very large, with little shade across the courtyard. Older visitors can enjoy the facade and the front hall without touring the whole building.
With parents at Helical Stepwell: The upper rim is level and easy. The spiral stair is worn and steep in places, with no handrail we could confirm, so older visitors can look from the top or descend only partway.

Guides for the stops on these routes
Pacing
Pacing a Champaner trip for parents and children
- Start early; the ruins are open fields with little shade, and heat builds quickly even in winter.
- Hire a car and guide for the day; the monuments are scattered and signage is limited.
- The lower monuments are mostly level; the hill is the difficult part, with about 250 steps after the ropeway.
- Avoid Navratri (September to October) and weekends if you dislike crowds at the ropeway and temple.
- Carry water, a hat and a seat stool; there are few benches or cafes at the monuments.
- Check ropeway status on the day, especially in the monsoon.
