How to reach Champhai by air

There is no commercial airport at Champhai. The nearest is Lengpui Airport (AJL), about 32 km north of Aizawl, with flights from Guwahati, Kolkata, Delhi and a few regional cities. From there it is a long road trip of about 194 km. Pawan Hans lists a helicopter link from Lengpui to Champhai; check whether it is currently running and how to book.

How to reach Champhai by train

There is no railway at Champhai. The nearest railhead is Sairang (SANG), about 15 km from Aizawl and opened in September 2025, with trains to Guwahati, Kolkata, Silchar and Delhi; check current services. Silchar in Assam is the older, longer-established railhead. Either way, you continue by road to Champhai.

How to reach Champhai by road

Champhai is about 194 km from Aizawl by hill road and takes most of a day, so allow a long travel day. Shared Sumo-type cars have run from Aizawl in early morning and late afternoon departures, except on Sundays and Christian holidays; a private car is more flexible. From Assam, the route runs through Silchar and Aizawl.

Getting around Champhai

Local distances are short but the hill roads are slow. Hire a car with a driver for Zokhawthar, Vangchhia, Murlen and Hnahlan, and agree the full-day plan in advance. The town centre can be walked in a short time, but streets are steep. Hardly any app-based taxis operate here.

Easy transfers to and in Champhai

  • Break the journey from Aizawl. The road is about 194 km and slow; many travellers take eight hours or more, so leave early and avoid driving in the dark.
  • Keep Sunday free. Most shops, restaurants and public transport stop, so buy supplies on Saturday and use the day to rest or sightsee by car.
  • Choose sights by terrain. The valley viewpoints and Zokhawthar are easy; Vangchhia, Murlen and Lengteng involve uneven ground and long drives.
  • Carry regular medicines and a basic first-aid kit; medical facilities are limited and the nearest large hospitals are in Aizawl.
  • Ask the airline or railway for wheelchair or porter assistance when you book, not on the day.
  • Pre-book the pickup from the airport or station, so nobody has to negotiate with drivers after a long journey.
  • Choose arrivals in daylight where you can, and keep the first afternoon free to rest.
