Plan 01
1 day in Champhai
- 01
Day 1: Valley and border market
Start with the view over the rice valley from the town, ideally in morning light, and walk a short stretch of the main streets while shops are open. Hire a car and drive to Zokhawthar for the border market, going back by early afternoon, because the town winds down early in the evening. If the sky is clear, finish with the valley view again at sunset.
Plan 02
2 days in Champhai
- 01
Day 1: Town, valley and Zokhawthar
Spend the morning on the valley viewpoints and the town, then go to Zokhawthar for the border market and its customs station and return by mid-afternoon. Keep the evening quiet; shops and restaurants close early.
- 02
Day 2: Vangchhia and Hnahlan
Drive south to Vangchhia to see the menhirs and the embossed Kawtchhuah Ropui stones, with a local guide if you can find one. Come back through the town for lunch, then head north to Hnahlan, the grape-growing village, in the afternoon.
Plan 03
3 days in Champhai
- 01
Day 1: Town and valley
Take the valley views, Sikpui Lung and an unhurried look at the town. Rest in the afternoon; the altitude and the long road in make a slow first day sensible.
Stop Time needed Walking Best time Sikpui Lung 20 to 30 minutes Easy Daylight, dry weather Pace: All the stops today are easy on the legs.
- 02
Day 2: Murlen National Park
Make an early start for Murlen with a car and driver. Walk with a local guide if one is available, and look for birds and the hoolock gibbon's calls. Confirm access and any permissions with the forest department beforehand.
Stop Time needed Walking Best time Murlen National Park Full day; two days if you stay in a village Demanding October to March, when it is cooler and visibility is better Pace: Murlen National Park involves a lot of walking or steps — do it early, and keep the rest of the day light.
With parents at Murlen National Park: Paths are forest trails with roots and slopes, and there are few facilities inside the park. The drive is long and winding. Most older travellers will be happier with short, guided walks near the edge or birdwatching from the road.
- 03
Day 3: Zokhawthar and Vangchhia
Visit the border market at Zokhawthar in the morning, then continue to Vangchhia for the menhirs. Use the remaining time for Hnahlan on the way out, or save it as a rest day before the drive back to Aizawl.

Guides for the stops on these routes
Pacing
Pacing a Champhai trip for parents and children
- Break the journey from Aizawl. The road is about 194 km and slow; many travellers take eight hours or more, so leave early and avoid driving in the dark.
- Bring warm layers even in the dry season; at about 1,678 m, mornings and evenings are properly cold from November to February.
- Keep Sunday free. Most shops, restaurants and public transport stop, so buy supplies on Saturday and use the day to rest or sightsee by car.
- Choose sights by terrain. The valley viewpoints and Zokhawthar are easy; Vangchhia, Murlen and Lengteng involve uneven ground and long drives.
- Carry regular medicines and a basic first-aid kit; medical facilities are limited and the nearest large hospitals are in Aizawl.
- Carry your permit: Indian visitors from outside Mizoram usually need an Inner Line Permit, which can be issued on arrival at Lengpui Airport. Carry photo ID and a printout or screenshot; foreigners should check separate rules.
