1 day in Chatra

Day 1: Itkhori and its temple museum
Leave Chatra after an early breakfast and drive east for about 35 km to Itkhori. Spend the morning at the Bhadrakali temple, including the carved Buddhist stupa fragments and the small museum if it is open. Have lunch at a simple roadside place on the Grand Trunk Road side, then return to Chatra with a stop at Goa Waterfall if the season suits. Finish with a quiet evening in town.
Stop Time needed Walking Best time Goa Waterfall 1 to 2 hours Moderate September to February; Shrawan Mondays are festival-busy Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.
With parents at Goa Waterfall: The approach is partly by vehicle and then on foot over rough ground, and there are no seats. Fine for fit older visitors; others should consider whether the walk suits them.

Day 3: Lawalong or Kunda
Choose one long outing: a daylight drive to Lawalong Wildlife Sanctuary, about 35 km from Chatra, to look at the forest and birds, or a trip to the ruined Kunda fort and cave. Check road conditions and local advice before leaving, and plan to be back well before dark.
Stop Time needed Walking Best time Lawalong Wildlife Sanctuary A full day including the drive Moderate November to February, when the forest is dry and the weather mild; avoid the monsoon Kunda Fort and Cave 2 to 3 hours including the drive Moderate November to February; the cave draws large crowds at Maha Shivaratri Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.
With parents at Lawalong Wildlife Sanctuary: Mostly seen from the car or short walks on uneven forest tracks. There is little seating, shade or toilet access, and a long drive over district roads, so the day is tiring for those with limited mobility.
With parents at Kunda Fort and Cave: The ruins and cave involve uneven ground, and there is no seating, shade or toilets. Better suited to confident walkers; others may prefer to see the site from the access road.

Pacing
Pacing a Chatra trip for parents and children
- Itkhori's temple area is largely level and the best choice for older parents; keep Kauleshwari, which is a climb, for a day when everyone feels fresh.
- Start every outing early. Roads are slow, shade is limited at the temples, and there is almost nowhere to sit near the waterfalls.
- Carry a flask of water, medicines, snacks and cash. ATMs, pharmacies and clean toilets are scarce outside Chatra town.
- Do not plan forest drives or waterfall walks for the monsoon. Tracks turn slippery, and some trails involve a few kilometres on foot.
- Hire a car with a driver who knows the district, and agree the day's route in advance so you are back before dark.
- Heat: April to June is hot on the plateau, with May highs above 36 degrees Celsius. Plan temple and forest visits for the first hours after sunrise and rest through the afternoon.
