Before you go
Chatra with elderly parents: what to know
- Itkhori's temple area is largely level and the best choice for older parents; keep Kauleshwari, which is a climb, for a day when everyone feels fresh.
- Start every outing early. Roads are slow, shade is limited at the temples, and there is almost nowhere to sit near the waterfalls.
- Carry a flask of water, medicines, snacks and cash. ATMs, pharmacies and clean toilets are scarce outside Chatra town.
- Do not plan forest drives or waterfall walks for the monsoon. Tracks turn slippery, and some trails involve a few kilometres on foot.
- Hire a car with a driver who knows the district, and agree the day's route in advance so you are back before dark.
Easiest first
Places in Chatra sorted by walking effort
Easy on the legs (1)
- Bhadrakali Temple, Itkhori (Places of worship · 1.5 to 3 hours) — The grounds are mostly level, with short walks between shrines and stone remains. Shade and seating are limited, floors can be hot underfoot in summer, and crowds are larger on festival days.
Some walking — plan a break (4)
- Goa Waterfall (Places to visit · 1 to 2 hours) — The approach is partly by vehicle and then on foot over rough ground, and there are no seats. Fine for fit older visitors; others should consider whether the walk suits them.
- Kunda Fort and Cave (Places to visit · 2 to 3 hours including the drive) — The ruins and cave involve uneven ground, and there is no seating, shade or toilets. Better suited to confident walkers; others may prefer to see the site from the access road.
- Lawalong Wildlife Sanctuary (Places to visit · A full day including the drive) — Mostly seen from the car or short walks on uneven forest tracks. There is little seating, shade or toilet access, and a long drive over district roads, so the day is tiring for those with limited mobility.
- Tamasin Waterfall (Places to visit · 2 to 3 hours including the drive) — The approach and the viewing area involve uneven ground, and there is no seating or shade infrastructure. The forest keeps things cool, but wet rock is slippery; stay on firm ground.
Lots of walking or steps — choose carefully (1)
- Kauleshwari Temple, Kolhua Hill (Places of worship · 2 to 3 hours on the hill, plus the drive) — The hill involves a climb on uneven ground, and the summit can be crowded during festivals. Step counts, handrails and seating are not published, so ask locally and be ready to stop at the lower shrines if needed.

Practical tips for Chatra
- Heat. April to June is hot on the plateau, with May highs above 36 degrees Celsius. Plan temple and forest visits for the first hours after sunrise and rest through the afternoon.
- Monsoon. Rain from June to September is heavy, peaking in July and August. Hill roads and forest tracks become slippery, and some waterfall trails are best avoided.
- Getting around. There is no train or airport in Chatra, so most visitors arrive by road from Gaya, Koderma or Ranchi. Within the district, a hired car with a driver is much easier than buses.
- Daylight and safety. Plan to be back at your base before dark. Check local advice on road conditions and forest areas, particularly around Lawalong, before heading out.
- Money. Carry cash. ATMs thin out quickly outside the town, and small shops and temples rarely take cards.
- Dress at temples. Dress modestly and be ready to remove footwear at shrines. Leather items and photography may be restricted at some temples, so ask before you use a camera inside.
- Water and food. Carry bottled water, snacks and fruit. There is little to buy near the waterfalls and hill shrines, and few clean toilets.
- Phone coverage. Mobile signal can drop in forest and hill areas. Download maps offline and tell your hotel your route and expected return time.
