Plan 01

1 day in Chaukori

  1. 01

Day 1: Sunrise, tea terraces and Berinag

Be at a clear viewpoint before sunrise to watch light reach the Panchachuli and Nanda Devi range, then return for a slow breakfast. Walk the road through the tea terraces in the late morning, and drive the short distance to Berinag for the Nag temple and the view from the town. Come back to Chaukori for tea and the sunset light on the peaks. This is a rushed visit given the road time; treat it as a day stop on a longer Kumaon route.

Plan 02

2 days in Chaukori

  1. 01

Day 1: Arrive, rest and watch the evening light

Plan to reach Chaukori by mid-afternoon after the mountain drive. Settle in, take tea and watch the sunset from the village or from your stay. Keep the evening quiet; the altitude and long road make an early night sensible.

  2. 02

Day 2: Sunrise, tea gardens and Berinag

Look for the sunrise on the peaks first. After breakfast, walk the tea garden road and visit the musk deer park, which needs a steep climb of about half an hour on the evidence of visitor accounts. Drive to Berinag in the afternoon for the Nag temple and a Himalayan view over the valley, then return.

Plan 03

3 days in Chaukori

  1. 01

    Day 1: Arrive and settle

Arrive in the afternoon, rest, and watch sunset on the peaks. Early night.

  2. 02

    Day 2: Chaukori and Berinag

Sunrise first, then a slow morning on the tea garden road. After lunch, drive to Berinag for the Nag temple and the town's view of the range. Return for the evening light.

  3. 03

Day 3: Patal Bhuvaneshwar and Gangolihat

Leave after an early breakfast for Patal Bhuvaneshwar and join the queue before the morning crowds build. Continue to Gangolihat for the Hat Kalika temple, then return to Chaukori; allow most of the day and take a driver who knows the roads.

Pacing

Pacing a Chaukori trip for parents and children

  • Allow a rest day after the long drive. The road from Kathgodam is about 198 km and mostly winding, so a night halfway is kinder than a single push.
  • Altitude is about 2,010 m, so evenings and early mornings are cold even in spring. Pack layers, a warm cap and a windproof jacket.
  • Choose a stay with a view-facing room or a seating area. Sunrise and sunset can then be enjoyed without walking.
  • Skip the musk deer park hike if knees are an issue; accounts describe a steep climb of about 30 to 35 minutes. The tea road is easy by comparison.
  • Patal Bhuvaneshwar involves a narrow cave passage with steps and a chain handhold. Consider it only if you are steady on stairs and comfortable in confined spaces.
  • Cold: At about 2,010 m, nights are cold even in April and October. Carry a warm jacket, cap and socks, and ask your stay about heating in winter.
