Chikhaldara travel guide

Vidarbha's only hill resort: cool Satpura air, valley viewpoints, a ruined fort and the edge of Melghat's tiger forest.

Chikhaldara is a small hill resort in Amravati district, at about 1,118 m on the edge of the Satpura range. It is the only hill resort in the Vidarbha region, and the only place in Maharashtra where coffee is grown, a legacy of the British, who found the green plateau reminiscent of England after Captain Robinson of the Hyderabad Regiment visited in 1823. The name is traditionally traced to Keechakdara, the valley into which Bhima is said to have thrown Keechaka in the Mahabharata.

The pleasures are modest and outdoor: drive-up viewpoints such as Hurricane, Prospect and Panchbol Points, the Bhimkund gorge, Devi Point's cave shrine and the ruins of Gawilgarh Fort, where Arthur Wellesley's army won in 1803. Beyond the plateau lies the Melghat Tiger Reserve, about 2,768 square kilometres of dry teak forest, with a safari gate at Vairat and a larger forest camp at Semadoh.

It is a quiet place, with limited accommodation and few formal facilities, so it rewards planning. October to February is the most comfortable window; the monsoon brings waterfalls but heavy rain, and summers are warm even on the hill. Seniors will find the viewpoints easy but the long ghat road, bumpy safari jeeps and uneven fort paths worth thinking about.

Food to try in Chikhaldara

Food and restaurants

Food in Chikhaldara is simple. Expect Vidarbha home cooking in small hotels and guesthouses: zunka-bhakar, pithla, poha for breakfast and sabudana khichdi on fasting days. Dining options are limited and evening opening hours can be early, so eat at your accommodation when in doubt.

Take bottled water, avoid raw salads from roadside stalls, and carry snacks for safari days. Coffee is grown on the plateau, but I have not verified specific plantation cafes; ask locally.

Markets, makers and what to take home.

Shopping in Chikhaldara

Shopping

Shopping is minimal: small stalls near the viewpoints and Devi Point sell snacks and souvenirs. The distinctive local product is Chikhaldara coffee; ask in town where it can be bought and confirm it is grown locally. Forest-department outlets and camps may sell local items, but check on arrival.

Choose without overthinking

Which Chikhaldara experience is right for your trip?

Most plans get crowded because nobody is willing to choose. These comparisons make the trade-offs clear.

Vairat safari or a Semadoh stay?

Vairat is booked in town and fits a half day; choose it if time is short. Semadoh is a longer drive and an overnight base in the forest; choose it if wildlife is the main purpose.

Gawilgarh Fort or Narnala Fort?

Gawilgarh is near Chikhaldara and linked to the 1803 siege; Narnala is a larger triple fort but a long drive away in Akola district. Most visitors should pick Gawilgarh.

Viewpoints or Muktagiri?

The viewpoints are easy and scenic. Muktagiri involves about 600 steps but offers a major Jain pilgrimage site. Choose by mobility and interest.

Winter or monsoon?

Winter is clear and comfortable. The monsoon is green with waterfalls like Bhimkund, but heavy rain can hide views and make roads slippery.
