Before you go

Chikhaldara with elderly parents: what to know

  • The ghat road up to the plateau is winding; take motion-sickness tablets if needed and travel in daylight.
  • Viewpoints are mostly drive-up, so older visitors can enjoy them without walking far; keep clear of unfenced edges.
  • Gawilgarh Fort has uneven ground and little shade; limit the visit to the outer gates if mobility is limited.
  • Muktagiri involves about 600 steps; confirm you are comfortable before committing.
  • Safari jeeps are open and bumpy; ask about seating and pick a shorter drive.
  • Nights can be cool in winter; carry layers and confirm heating and hot water at your stay.

Easiest first

Places in Chikhaldara sorted by walking effort

Easy on the legs (3)

  • Hurricane, Prospect and Panchbol Points (Places to visit · 2–3 hours for several points) — Most points are a short walk from where the car stops, with open ground and few steps. Edges can be steep and wind strong; shade and seating are limited and facilities vary.
  • Melghat Tiger Reserve safari at Vairat (Places to visit · 2–4 hours per safari) — Jeeps are open and bumpy on forest tracks, with high steps and limited back support. Older visitors with joint or back issues should ask about the vehicle and choose shorter drives.
  • Semadoh (Places to visit · Full day or overnight) — The camp is basic, with dormitories and cottages; roads are long and winding and vehicles are open jeeps for safaris. It suits fit older travellers who value quiet over comfort.

Some walking — plan a break (3)

  • Bhimkund (Places to visit · 45–90 minutes) — Roadside access is short, but the viewing areas near the gorge involve uneven ground and drops; stay behind barriers. Wet-season surfaces are slippery, and there is little shaded seating.
  • Devi Point (Places of worship · 45–90 minutes) — The upper tableland is mostly level, but the stairs down to the cave temple can be steep and crowded. Seating and shade are limited.
  • Gawilgarh Fort (Places to visit · 1.5–3 hours on site; allow a half day with travel) — Cars can reach the base, but the gate approaches and ramparts are uneven, unrailed in places and have little shade or seating. Older travellers can enjoy the outer gates and viewpoints without climbing every rampart.

Lots of walking or steps — choose carefully (1)

  • Muktagiri Jain Tirth (Places of worship · 2–3 hours) — Visitors climb about 600 steps; the climb is demanding for those with knee or heart problems. Rest points and dining halls exist, but plan for a slow pace.

Practical tips for Chikhaldara

  • Getting there. Chikhaldara is far from major airports; Nagpur is about 230 km away. Plan a full day of travel and start early to arrive in daylight.
  • Road. The ghat road climbs about 40 km (per Outlook); drive carefully, avoid driving at night and allow time for fog or rain.
  • Weather. Nights are cool from November to February; carry layers. Monsoon rainfall is very heavy in July and August.
  • Money. Cash is useful; card and UPI acceptance can be patchy. Withdraw before you climb.
  • Safaris. Book at the Nature Interpretation Centre or through the Forest Department. Confirm season and timings before travelling.
  • Connectivity. Mobile coverage can be patchy in forest areas; download maps and confirm directions beforehand.
  • Wildlife. The area borders a tiger reserve; avoid open areas after dark and follow staff advice.
  • Dress and photography. Dress modestly at temples; ask before photographing inside shrines or at forest camps.
