The short answer
Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary: what visitors should know first
Worth a full day if wildlife matters more to you than comfort. Confirm safari arrangements with the forest office before you go, since operators and rules change. Leave early, expect bumpy tracks, and treat any tiger sighting as luck rather than a promise.
History and context
The story behind Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary
Bhadra began in 1951 as the Jagara Valley Wildlife Sanctuary. In 1974 it was extended and renamed Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary, and in 1998 it was brought under Project Tiger.
All 26 villages inside the sanctuary were relocated to a new settlement by 2002, in what is described as the first completed village relocation programme in a tiger reserve in India.

Why it matters
Why Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary is worth your time
Bhadra started in 1951 as the Jagara Valley Wildlife Sanctuary, was extended and renamed in 1974, and became a Project Tiger reserve in 1998. Its forests range from about 615 to 1,875 m in elevation, and it has an estimated tiger population in the low thirties, with elephants, gaur, leopards and sloth bears sharing the habitat.
It is also known as the first tiger reserve in India to complete a village relocation programme, with the 26 villages inside the sanctuary moved outside by 2002. That helped the forest recover and is a large part of why it matters in the wider story of Karnataka's wildlife conservation.

Tiger country
The reserve holds a respectable tiger population, though dense forest makes sightings rare.
Plan your visit
How to experience it
Treat Bhadra as a full-day trip. The reserve lies on the northern side of the Chikmagalur district around Lakkavalli, and the drive in is long, so leave before dawn if you want the cooler morning safari window. Settle safari arrangements before you set out; accounts differ on whether the forest department or a lodge operates the vehicles, and a minimum group size may apply.
On the drive, expect deciduous and moist forest, bamboo stands and the arms of the Bhadra reservoir at the western edge. Most sightings are of chital, sambar, gaur and elephants, with birds such as hornbills, parakeets and river terns for those who look up. Leopards and tigers are present, but forest cover is dense and sightings are uncommon.
Bring binoculars, water, a hat and a light jacket for the early morning. Keep to your vehicle and keep noise low. The reservoir viewpoints and the dam area are the usual places for a pause and a break.
