Why it matters
Why Ettina Bhuja Trek is worth your time
Ettina Bhuja is one of the most recognisable peaks in this part of the Western Ghats, its humped outline giving it the name 'ox's shoulder'. It offers a real summit feeling for a short effort, which is why it is popular with first-time trekkers.
The forest around it is part of a continuous belt of evergreen and grassland that matters for rainfall and wildlife. Limited online slots and guides are how the Forest Department keeps numbers in check.

How to experience it
The booked route starts near the temple in Byrapura village, about 25 km from Mudigere. It is a round trip of roughly 4 to 6 km, first through forest, then up open grassy slopes to the summit. Sources give the summit height as roughly 1,200 to 1,300 m (about 3,900 to 4,300 ft).
The last section to the top is steep and the summit edge falls away sharply, so keep back from the drop and follow the guide. On a clear day the views run across forested ridges towards Dakshina Kannada.
Allow three to four hours return with stops. Start in the morning, carry water and wear shoes with grip. In the monsoon the path is wet and leech-prone and the summit is often in cloud.
Plan with confidence
Small decisions that make the visit easier.
- Book on Aranya Vihaara at least a day ahead
- Start from Byrapura in the morning
- Keep well back from the summit edge
- Avoid heavy rain days
- Carry water and leech protection in the wet months
